National Blind Dog Day aims to raise awareness about the amazing abilities of these widely misunderstood pets.

Like humans, some dogs are born blind, while others lose their vision in one or both eyes because of age, trauma, or diseases. Fortunately, they quickly adjust to their new reality and can live long, happy lives without losing most of their independence.

We encourage people not to shortchange visually disabled dogs when choosing a furry companion to adopt. While they may need more care at first, they adapt quickly and can live long, happy, and healthy lives without being a “burden.”
If you have a blind dog, don’t forget to share your story and experience – let people know the rewards and challenges of raising a visually impaired canine.

Invest in Your Dog’s Eye Health

There are numerous potential causes of vision loss in dogs. While some can be avoided to save your pet from becoming blind, others, like age and your dog breed’s predisposition to vision problems, are inevitable.

Some common causes of eye discomfort or visual impairment include the following:

Diabetes
Glaucoma
Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA)
Suddenly Acquired Retinal Degeneration (SARDS)
Cataracts
Extreme trauma to the head
Brain tumors
Old age

Cats are masters at hiding pain. Veterinarians can often detect health conditions during checkups long before they become noticeable. If you or someone you know has a cat, it’s important to emphasize the importance of veterinary checkups to keep them happy and healthy.

Celebrate National Take Your Cat to the Vet Day today by calling us to schedule your favorite kitty’s next visit!

🌱🐶 Keep your furry friends safe by being aware of which plants can be harmful to them.

😕 Elephant's Ear, Begonia, Caladium, Dumb Cane, Philodendron, and Umbrella Tree are examples of plants containing needle-shaped crystals called raphides that can cause irritation, swelling, and difficulty swallowing in pets.

👀 Other plants like Nightshades, Datura, Poppy, Oleander, and Foxglove can also be harmful to pets.

🚫 Be proactive by preventing access to harmful plants and keeping your pets safe and healthy.

National Check the Chip Day is August 15th and we want to remind pet owners of the importance of microchipping your pet and keeping your information up to date.

According to the American Veterinary Medical Association, one in three family pets will get lost at some point in their life, and only six out of every ten microchips are registered with the pet owner’s information. Microchipped dogs are more than twice as likely to be returned to their owners, and microchipped cats are more than 20 times as likely to be reunited with their family.

A microchip is a permanent form of identification should your pet get away and lose their collar or tags. Every found pet that is brought in to the clinic or any animal shelter is immediately scanned for a microchip in hopes of quickly finding their owners and returning them home. But many times, owners forget to update their contact information when they move or get a new phone number.
We encourage everyone to take a second today to ensure their contact information is up to date on their current pet’s microchip! You can typically go to the website of the company your chip is through or call them to update your information in just a few minutes. If you are unsure of where your chip is through, or if your pet even has a chip, you can stop by the clinic anytime for a free scan! The Logan County Humane Society also has a chip scanner that is free to the public, available 24/7 out in front of their building – especially handy if you find a pet late at night! If your pet needs a microchip, give us a call and we can help!
