PSA - it is going to be dangerously hot the next few days and your pets can quickly overheat. Make sure they have easy access to clean, fresh and cool water. If at all possible they should be in air conditioning maybe even with access to a fan that is actively moving cool air. If they absolutely have to be outside, lots of shade, maybe a kiddy pool for water to get in and maybe try to hang a fan somewhere to at least provide air movement. Watch them for signs of respiratory distress, eyes wide and vigorous almost uncontrollable panting. If you notice that, get them wet on their abdomen and where they can have cool air actively blowing on them. Get to your Veterinarian if that occurs. It is important to be vigilant. It doesn’t take long for disaster to happen in these temps.

Parvo is alive n well in the area. We continue to recommend a good puppy series as the best way to prevent infection. That means a series of vaccinations every three weeks starting at somewhere between 6 to 8 weeks of age and the last vaccination should be given when the puppy is four months of age or so. There are immunologic reasons for this and you should visit with your veterinarian. As adults, you can either have your dogs titer checked to make sure they’re protected or get booster vaccinations at the appropriate time. The best thing you can do is talk to your veterinarian and not Dr. Google.

FIREWORKS will likely be happening everywhere July 3 and 4. Now is the time to make sure you have whatever you need on hand to keep your pet calm. Call your Veterinarian this week to visit about, schedule an appointment if necessary, and get those medications on hand. A lot of clinics will be closed on July 3, as will ours, so don’t wait too late. Keep your pets calm!!

If you know you know. If not, this is a positive heartworm test on a dog. Performed in our clinic. Heartworm is spread by a mosquito biting a heartworm positive dog and then biting another dog. The mosquito transmits the disease. This dog is owned by a great owner, will be treated and do well. Not the owners fault at all this dog is heartworm positive, she rescued this girl and is giving her the best life. But this illustrates the importance of testing. A heartworm positive dog can serve as a reservoir for infection for lots of other dogs. And if your dog is not on preventative, they are not protected and are vulnerable. Check with your veterinarian to make sure that your dog is on an appropriate preventative.

This dog also came equipped with a tick or two which were dispatched and the dog is now on a good flea and tick preventative! The parasites are out n about!! Protect your pet. Tick borne diseases and flea allergies/anemias are not good!!
