Today is World Veterinary Day!

World Veterinary Day is celebrated to recognize the lifesaving work of veterinary professionals around the globe. We extend our sincere gratitude to our doctors and team members for their hard work, compassion, and unwavering dedication to our patients. 🐾🩺

The AVMA proudly joins the World Veterinary Association (WVA), HealthforAnimals, and colleagues from around the world in celebrating World Veterinary Day. The 2026 theme is “Veterinarians: Guardians of Food and Health.”

From farm to fork, veterinarians are at the frontline of ensuring that food of animal origin is safe, nutritious, and responsibly produced. Their work protects consumers, supports sustainable food systems, prevents zoonotic diseases, and strengthens global health security. World Veterinary Day 2026 aims to elevate public understanding and policy recognition of veterinary services as a cornerstone of sustainable and secure food systems.

🌱Spring is here and that means rainy days are here as well, so let's talk Leptospirosis. 🌧

Leptospirosis is a serious bacterial infection that is zoonotic which means it can affect both animals and humans causing kidney and liver failure. This disease spreads through contaminated water, soil, or urine from infected animals such as raccoons, opossums, skunks, and rodents, especially rats.

Signs of Leptospirosis:
-Fever
-Vomiting & diarrhea
-Lethargy & muscle pain
-Increased thirst & urination
-Jaundice (yellowing of gums or eyes)

The best way to protect your furry friend? Vaccination! Lepto is a part of our core vaccine schedule that we start once your pup is 12 weeks of age which protects against 4 strains of lepto. The lepto vaccine is also now considered a core vaccine by the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) and other veterinary organizations. ALL DOGS are at risk for leptospirosis, regardless of age, s*x, breed, geographic location, lifestyle, and the time of year. The smallest puddle in your driveway or backyard could be carrying this disease. Avoiding letting your dog swim or drink from stagnant water is another way of prevention.

🫀April is National Heartworm Awareness Month and we wanted to take this opportunity to discuss the importance of prevention for this serious disease.

Heartworm disease is transmitted through the bite of infected mosquitoes. 🦟

All breeds of dogs are susceptible to heartworm infection, regardless of size or age. Even indoor dogs are at risk if mosquitoes are present in their environment. Heartworm disease can lead to severe health problems in dogs, including damage to the heart, lungs, and blood vessels, which can ultimately be fatal if left untreated.

Prevention is much safer, more effective, and less expensive than treating heartworm disease. There are several FDA-approved heartworm preventives available including monthly oral medications and topical treatments. We are happy to answer any questions you may have regarding heartworm prevention for your pets! Give us a call and we are happy to help!
