GROSS BUT IMPORTANT:
CUTEREBRA IN DOGS, CATS, AND BUNNIES

Ever find a strange lump with a tiny hole on your dog or cat? Especially if they spend time outdoors? It could be a Cuterebra larva, commonly called a botfly or “warble.”

Cuterebra larvae can enter through the skin and develop underneath it, creating a lump with a small breathing hole. You may notice swelling, drainage, licking, or even see the larva moving!

DO NOT squeeze or try to remove it yourself! If the larva ruptures during removal, it can cause significant inflammation or an allergic reaction.

Your veterinarian can safely remove the larva and determine if additional treatment is needed.

If you find a mysterious lump with a hole, especially on an outdoor pet, have it checked by your veterinarian!

🐴Lacerations, What Every Horse Owner Should Know 🩺

Cuts and lacerations are one of the most common emergencies we see in horses. While some may look minor, even a small wound can involve important structures such as tendons, joints, ligaments, or tendon sheaths. Prompt treatment can make all the difference in your horse’s recovery.

If your horse gets a laceration:

•Stay calm and safely restrain your horse.
•Control bleeding with firm, clean pressure using gauze or a clean towel.
•If possible, gently rinse the wound with sterile saline or clean water to remove obvious dirt. Avoid aggressive scrubbing.
•Keep the wound as clean as possible and, if practical, cover it with a clean bandage while waiting for your veterinarian.

Call your veterinarian as soon as possible because, time matters!
Many lacerations can be sutured if treated promptly. Waiting too long increases the risk of infection, swelling, delayed healing, and may prevent the wound from being closed. Early treatment often means a better cosmetic outcome, a faster recovery, and fewer long-term complications.

💉 Don’t forget that wounds are also a good time to ensure your horse’s tetanus vaccination is up to date.

When in doubt, it’s always better to have a wound evaluated. What appears to be “just a cut” can sometimes become a much larger problem if left untreated.

At Beguin Veterinary Service, we’re here to help keep your horses healthy and sound. If your horse suffers a laceration, don’t wait, give us a call so we can determine the best course of treatment.

🎆 Fourth of July Safety Tips for Your Pets & Livestock 🇺🇸

The Fourth of July is a wonderful time to celebrate, but it can be one of the most stressful and dangerous holidays for our animals. Here are some tips to help keep everyone safe and sound this holiday.

🐶 Dogs & Cats
• Keep pets indoors during fireworks.
• Make sure collars and ID tags are up to date.
• Close windows, curtains, and turn on a TV or fan to help drown out loud noises.
• Provide a quiet, secure room where your pet feels safe.
• Never bring pets to fireworks displays.
• If your pet has severe anxiety, contact your veterinarian before the holiday to discuss safe medications.

🐴 Horses/ Livestock 🐄
• If possible, keep animals in a familiar pastures or stalls before fireworks begin.
• Check fences and gates for damage ahead of time.
• Put horses in the trailer at rodeos before the firework display.
• Avoid riding during fireworks or in areas where fireworks are expected.
• Remove anything from fences or pens that could cause injury if a animal spooks.

🍔 Holiday Foods Can Be Dangerous
Keep pets away from:
❌ Corn cobs
❌ Cooked bones
❌ Chocolate
❌ Grapes & raisins
❌ Onions & garlic
❌ Alcohol
❌ Xylitol (found in sugar-free gum, candy, and some peanut butter)

🎇 Fireworks Are NOT Toys for Animals
Spent fireworks, sparklers, and firecracker debris can cause burns, poisoning, and gastrointestinal obstruction if chewed or swallowed.

❤️ A little preparation can help keep everyone safe and make the holiday enjoyable for both you and your animals.

From all of us at Beguin Veterinary Service, we wish you a safe, happy, and healthy Fourth of July!

We see heartbreaking cases every year involving lily toxicity in cats.

Many people do not realize that even a small amount of exposure can be life-threatening.

Please help us spread awareness:
🌸 Keep lilies out of homes with cats.
🌸 Check flower bouquets carefully.
🌸 Seek emergency veterinary care immediately if exposure is suspected.

This simple precaution can save a life.
