EQUINE Deworming & F***l floats

Spring deworming for horses (typically March-April) is critical to target parasites like strongyles and bots as they become active with warmer weather. Recommended, effective treatments include Ivermectin or Moxidectin. For optimal results, a f***l egg count should be performed first to identify high or low shedders.

Winter f***l testing for horses is crucial for detecting parasites that persist despite cold, wet conditions. Focus testing on identifying small strongyles and tapeworms. Samples should be fresh (under 3 days old, refrigerated, never frozen).

Call or email to request a f***l float and deworming protocols for your horses.

Equine thrush-A closer look

Thrush is a common bacterial infection in the frog of a horse's hoof, characterized by a foul odor and black discharge. It usually affects the frog's grooves and the central sulcus.
Signs include:
* Discharge: A thick, black, oily, and foul-smelling discharge
* Frog: The frog may be soft, peeling, and sore
* Pain: The horse may be sensitive to hoof or leg pressure
* Odor: A strong, unpleasant smell
Thrush is significantly more common in horses during winter due to increased exposure to moisture, mud, and manure-soaked bedding.

Pneumonia in Goats & Sheep

Description-
Pneumonia refers to inflammation of the lungs.

Animals more at risk of viral and bacterial pneumonia are young animals subjected to a range of stressors that are common in the export process including transportation, mixing with new animals, crowding, inadequate ventilation, dust and sudden climatic changes.

Clinical signs-
Bacterial pneumonias is often noticed to have signs, including reduced appetite, depression, rapid shallow breathing, coughing and nasal discharge.
Nasal and ocular discharge may result from dust or poor ventilation.

Treatment-
When infectious pneumonia is suspected, consult with your veterinarian about medication and treatment.

At home-
Ensure easy access to feed and water at all times. Most often it’s recommended to separate Infected animals from pen mates.

Prevention-
prevention generally involves management to reduce stressors that may increase the likelihood of disease. Options include avoiding mixing animals of different origins, reducing crowding, ensuring good ventilation, and providing shelter against sudden climatic changes. Early detection, isolation and treatment may reduce the extent and severity of outbreaks of bacterial pneumonia.

Before and after of a dental cleaning!

It’s so important to keep tarter off the teeth to keep the gums healthy and prevent infection and possible extractions. They also breathe in all the bacteria with each breath that can affect their heart and lungs overtime, sometimes causing irreversible damage.

Dental cleanings are recommended annually.

For those that were wondering the latest with the EHV outbreak, please read! This was published on 12/23/25.

𝗙𝗜𝗡𝗔𝗟 𝗘𝗛𝗩 𝗨𝗣𝗗𝗔𝗧𝗘 - from EDCC

“This will be our last update regarding the recent EHV situation.

We’re pleased to report that the EHV outbreak in the rodeo world appears to be resolved, there are no new cases being reported, and there are currently no farms under quarantine. Normal horse movement, showing, training, and riding activities are encouraged.

All official case numbers and outbreak information are reported through the Equine Disease Communication Center (EDCC), which remains the authoritative source for ongoing disease surveillance.

As always, biosecurity should remain part of everyday horse management, not just during outbreaks:
• Monitor temperatures regularly
• Use isolation for new or returning horses when possible
• Avoid sharing equipment between horses
• Maintain clean stalls, trailers, and water sources

Biosecurity resources: https://bveh.com/biosecurity-and-isolation-guidelines-for-horse-owners/

Thank you to everyone who communicated responsibly and followed precautions.

The outbreak died because the horse community did what we required in isolation, quarantining, and monitoring. 𝙇𝙚𝙩’𝙨 𝙜𝙚𝙩 𝙗𝙖𝙘𝙠 𝙩𝙤 𝙧𝙞𝙙𝙞𝙣𝙜, 𝙩𝙧𝙖𝙞𝙣𝙞𝙣𝙜, 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙨𝙝𝙤𝙬𝙞𝙣𝙜—with smart, routine biosecurity in place.”

Biosecurity is critical to limit exposure to infectious disease and the spread after exposure to a contagion. This document is intended as a review for horse owners and horse facilities.
