Ewe-topia suffered another great loss when Joe Kapelos passed away last month. We had just lived the loss of Linda Leeman. This is heavy news and there is no good way to deliver it.
Joe was a lion and Linda was a lioness and together they were the heartbeat of Ewe-topia. They welcomed everyone to their training facility and had a way of making all of us feel unique and special. They helped all of us in so many ways, from achieving a healthier relationship with our pets to understanding some of the complex dynamics involved in herding, where three species come together to make magic happen. That was not an easy endeavor that they undertook, but we all benefited from their patience and their passion for dogs, and their fondness for the dogs’ owners. Not only were they champions of their students, but Joe was also a walking encyclopedia. The times were rare if ever that he didn’t know a breed or its history. We could go to them with all kinds of questions from canine health to just about any dog sport. And Joe didn’t only train dogs but often fondly recalled Barney, his bear that he taught to do agility while in the service. Joe and Linda both shared their wealth of knowledge with their students and enjoyed every minute of it. They were true coaches and mentors.
Although Joe and Linda have passed, the spirit of Ewe-topia will live on in each of us by using the knowledge they passed on and maintaining the relationships and community they built. Their passing has been difficult, but please remember the happy moments you had out there … that is the best legacy that Joe and Linda would have wanted.
A get-together is being planned where we can celebrate the lives of Joe and Linda for May 14 at Ewe-topia. Information will be posted here and on Facebook as it becomes available, but we do ask that you do not stop by the property until that time.
