Our sweet Minnie gave us quite the scare Wednesday night. Her blood glucose dropped dangerously low, and she began showing signs of hypoglycemia.
Thankfully, one of our board members—an experienced ER vet tech with many years in the field—was just a phone call away. She helped us assess Minnie’s symptoms and figure out immediate next steps to help stabilize her, in case an emergency visit became necessary. Luckily, we had corn syrup on hand and within an hour or so, her glucose levels began to stabilize and her symptoms eased.
Looking back, we could tell something wasn’t right—she’d been feeling weak, having frequent potty accidents, and on Wednesday evening, she wasn’t excited for dinner. That’s when we really knew something was off. If you know Minnie, you know feeding time is usually her favorite part of the day!
She visited the vet yesterday. No UTI (thankfully!), and now we’re working on getting her insulin levels back to a healthy range. She also received a new glucose monitor yesterday… which unfortunately stopped working last night. So—back to the vet we go!
This is exactly why we maintain an emergency fund. It allows us to respond quickly in urgent situations like this, without hesitation. If that fund dips below our set threshold, we pause new intakes until it’s replenished. ER visits can be incredibly expensive, and one unexpected emergency could wipe us out. This is why we are so intentional about bringing in new dogs—we always want to ensure we’re fully prepared to care for those already in our rescue.
Thank you for supporting our small rescue and helping us continue this important work. We’ll keep you updated on Minnie’s health 🤍
