The Golden Bark Foundation

The Golden Bark Foundation The Golden Bark foundation is a senior dog rescue located in Utah. Foster based and volunteer ran! We plan to rescue and find homes for these senior dogs.

GBF’S MISSION

The Golden Bark Foundation is dedicated to rescuing and advocating for at-risk senior dogs, fulfilling their immediate needs and sending them off to a love filled retirement home. We focus on rescuing senior dogs because they are often forgotten and cast aside at the point in their lives when they need the most care. When they end up in shelters, people prefer to adopt younger dogs

that require less care and maintenance with fuller lives ahead. They deserve to know love in the latter portions of their life. Every dog deserves a home to live out their golden years.

Congratulations to Lucky on finding his retirement home! 🤍

Lucky was our one adoption in May, and we couldn’t be happier for him.

He came to GBF in October after being transferred from a shelter in Summit County alongside another dog. Before that, he had been surrendered when his owner struggled to manage his instinct to chase chickens.

As a German Shorthaired Pointer, Lucky was simply doing what he was bred to do. It’s a good reminder that breed traits matter and that doing your research before bringing a dog home can make a big difference.

Like many of our larger dogs, Lucky took a little longer to find the right fit. After more than 220 days in rescue, he finally found his perfect match—a dad who has owned several GSPs and understands exactly what a dog like Lucky needs to thrive. He knows the importance of providing both the mental and physical stimulation that sporting breeds crave.

This adoption was made even more special when one of our supporters donated a portion of Lucky’s adoption fee at one of our recent events!

We’re so grateful Lucky’s path led him to someone who truly understands him and will give him the life he deserves.

It may have taken over 220 days, but Lucky is finally home🤍

Part 2:
On Monday, May 18th, we took Chips in for a vet visit. We learned that he was in kidney failure, among other things. Despite that, he was still eating, drinking, and acting like himself. So we focused on keeping him comfortable, happy, and surrounded by love.

But that same week, his body began to give up. He stopped eating, and while we hoped it was just a fluke, by the end of the weekend we knew. Chips had already made his decision. He was tired, and he was ready to join his sister at the bridge.

On Friday morning, surrounded by his mom and us, he crossed the Rainbow Bridge. We were all there for him together—his blended family—until his very last breath.

His ashes will be scattered in the mountains, the same place where his sister’s ashes were scattered before him. The time we shared with him will never be forgotten, and his memory will continue to live on with GBF and everyone who had the opportunity to love him.

During this difficult time, we take solace in knowing he has been reunited with his sister once again. Free from pain, running together, and making up for the time they lost apart.

Rest easy, Chippy. We will never forget your quirky personality, your larger-than-life attitude, and your famous b***y bumps. Thank you for letting us love you. Thank you for letting me be another mom to you. 🤍

Part 1:
On Friday, we said goodbye to our sweet Chips.

Over three years ago, two dogs were abandoned on a hot April day in a field next to the Tooele Animal Shelter. Yes, you read that right—not inside the shelter, but outside—with a bowl of dog food and nothing else. Those two dogs were a bonded pair named Chips and Salsa.

They joined GBF in April 2023 and spent quite some time with us before finally being adopted in the fall of that same year.
Everyone grew quite fond of them. They had larger-than-life personalities, silly quirks, and always knew how to make you smile.

I personally grew very attached to Chips while I was fostering him. When an adopter was finally interested in the pair, I struggled with letting him go. I wanted to adopt him myself, but adopting both dogs wasn’t feasible, and we never wanted to separate them.

I struggled quite a bit after he left. I yearned to be his momma, and there was a lot of grief that came with saying goodbye. But as fate would have it, around the same time Chips left, another senior Min Pin was found as a stray at that very same shelter. His name was Tito. As life would have it, Tito helped heal my broken heart.

While I was deep in my grief over losing Tito last July, we heard from Chips’ mom that Salsa had passed away unexpectedly. Around that same time, she was diagnosed with some serious health issues and would soon be starting treatment. She didn’t have the strength to care for Chips and knew it would be best for him to return to his foster family while she focused on her health.

So last September, we welcomed him back with open arms, just as we had a few years before. Having him around while I was grieving Tito felt fitting somehow.

This time around, though, Chips wasn’t the same. Losing his sister changed him. He became more of a recluse and wasn’t the happy, perky dog we had known before. But we showered him with love, nonetheless. We kept his mom updated with frequent photos and visits. She hoped she would be able to take him back in a few months, but additional health challenges prevented that from happening.

So Chippy remained with GBF until the day his mom could bring him home again.

A little health update on sweet Lizzie 🤍

Lizzie had what initially seemed like symptoms of a stroke. She went to the ER yesterday, but unfortunately after waiting for hours, she still wasn’t seen. Since she was stable, it was decided to take her to her regular vet today instead.

The vet believes she experienced a vestibular episode, which is a sudden disturbance of the vestibular system that can cause loss of balance, head tilt, nausea, and disorientation—all signs Lizzie was showing. Thankfully, she’s feeling much better today and neurologically seems to be doing well. They sent out bloodwork and a thyroid panel just to make sure there isn’t anything else going on. We should have results back in a few days.

For now, she’s stable and doing well. The vet advised feeding her wet food for the next few days, using an elevated bowl to help her eat more comfortably, and putting mats down to help prevent slipping.

We are all so thankful she’s doing okay! She has such a wonderful foster who loves her deeply and advocates so well for her. Please keep sweet Lizzie in your thoughts 🤍

GBF is looking for more dog sitters!

Our fosters are the backbone of this rescue, and we want to make sure they can continue living their lives while giving so much to our sweet senior dogs. Having reliable dog sitters allows our fosters to take vacations, take breaks when needed and handle life's unexpected moments without worrying about their foster dog.

Dog sitting is one of the easiest ways to support our rescue and is a great low-commitment volunteer opportunity. All of our dog sitters receive the same training as our fosters, so you'll feel confident and prepared to step in when needed.

Fill out our foster application and select "Dog Sitter" and our foster coordinator will be in touch!
