There are horses that come along and embed themselves in your heart and stay there forever. Yesterday, we had the privilege of helping Philadelphia 54 cross the Rainbow Bridge. We have spent 10+ years following Christina and Phillys success. While our hearts are breaking with you, we are so thankful to have been a part your story. Rest easy Philly, you are already so very missedšŸ’”

I’m not sure that we are able to put into words the colossal impact this tiny girl had on our practice and our hearts. Hermione was special in so many ways. She provided comfort and companionship to countless patients in the hospital, being the ever present tiny roommate and nursemaid. Herm made it a point to saunter into the feed room at every available opportunity to grab a snack on her ā€œsmoke breaksā€ from babysitting her charges. Her nicker at feed time or snack time is a sound we will miss painfully.

Herm wandered the farm most days on a quest for the best grass around the ring, and only came in when she was ready. She got the occasional zoomies and it was something to see when she would avoid being caught, cantering across the driveway making a break for it. She was the first to greet a small kiddo, hopeful for a peppermint or some good scratches. She was patient and so kind with tentative people, making sure to be gentle and not pushy. She made a few appearances at nursing homes, parades and hospitals as an equine goodwill ambassador. The BEST girl.

Hermie had one of the most extensive costume and blanket collections of any horse on the farm. From giraffe print slinky’s to tiger stripes to bows and monogrammed blankets, Herm knew how to dress the part and tolerated our shenanigans with just the tiniest dose of sass.

Hermione is the last of the original Willow Creek Farm family. She outlived them all. She was our teacher in so many ways and we are not sure how to fill this hole in our hearts and on our farm. We love you Hermie. Thanks for the laughs and the memories and for being such a huge part of our story. Send our love to all of those who had to go before you. We will miss you terribly šŸ’”

Let's talk a little bit about Red Maple Toxicity...

Red maple trees are indiginous to this part of the US, and are normally not a big deal for horses and horse owners. However, being that we are still in "storm season" (shhhh don't say the H word) we wanted to touch in about how these trees can be a pain in the pasture.

Fresh red maple leaves are not the problem. It is the wilted leaves from windfall, pruned limbs or after a heavy frost that can produce poisoning. Most often you will see these downed leaves and branches following a major storm where red maple trees or limbs were blown down.

Horses at greatest risk for poisoning are horses not receiving enough roughage, horses kept in dry lots with limited hay, or young horses. After eating red maple leaves, horses develop severe anemia that results in weakness, depression, pale to yellow mucous membranes and dark brown to red urine due to the hemoglobin being released when the horse's red blood cells are destroyed.

Be especially diligent in removing fallen branches and leaves following a storm, and do not throw leaves gathered during yard work into the pasture. Trees in dry lots where horses are on limited forage should be cut down, as the horses will have a greater tendency to eat the leaves than pastured horses.

We have attached some images of Red Maple trees for reference, however your local extension agent is always available and happy to help identify these trees in your pastures!

If you suspect your horse has eaten red maple leaves, give your veterinarian a call immediately.

What EMS looks like. The body condition score of these horse is 8 for the one on top and 9 for the grey horse.
We cannot stress enough the amount of damage you are doing to your horse when they are this obese. EMS horses need to be managed in a way to control their sugar intake. Let us help you come up with a plan to make that happen.
