MarQueen Pet Emergency & Specialty

MarQueen Pet Emergency & Specialty A veterinary emergency and specialty hospital supporting general practitioners and their clients in and around the Sacramento area.

While visiting the beautiful city of Seattle, Washington our founders happened upon a charming hotel located in the theatre district of Seattle’s Queen Anne Avenue. The MarQueen hotel, as it were told, once served as residency to automobile engineers in the early 1900’s. These “doctors of motors” were brought in to provide Ford Motor Company with the finest engineering minds in the country. It is

our determined goal to serve as the premier specialty and after-hours ER support to our referring veterinarians, and to provide the highest level of excellence and comfort in the care of our patients. Welcome to MarQueen Pet Emergency and Specialty Hospital

Summer surfaces can heat up quickly – especially asphalt, concrete, and artificial turf.

By the time pavement feels hot to us, it can already be uncomfortable or even damaging to sensitive paw pads.

Pets experiencing paw pad burns may limp, lick at their feet, or develop redness and irritation after time outdoors.

During warmer days, checking surfaces before walks and avoiding the hottest parts of the afternoon can help keep pets more comfortable.

Last night, we had the pleasure of co-sponsoring our first continuing education event of 2026 alongside Hill’s Pet Nutrition!

Ann Della Maggiore, DVM, DACVIM, discussed the pathophysiology of icterus, key differences seen in dogs versus cats, and diagnostic approaches used to help determine the underlying cause and guide treatment plans. Lindsay Huie, DVM, also shared insight into how nutrition can support certain patient treatment plans and recovery.

Thank you to everyone who attended, and a special thank you to Hill’s Pet Nutrition for partnering with us on this CE event!

Meet Dusty!
Dusty is an adorable (and happy!), 2-year-old Chocolate Lab who was presented to MarQueen for advanced imaging due to swelling on his chest, under his skin. Dusty had previously been seen and treated by his family veterinarian for coughing after he ate some grass while running around outside. However, when his symptoms did not subside, he was referred to our Emergency and Critical Care team.

Upon Dusty’s arrival, Dr. Casey Kohen used an ultrasound to look inside the swelling, where he discovered a hidden 2-centimeter foxtail buried deep within his chest muscle! Dr. Kohen used ultrasound guidance and a wire marker to pinpoint the exact location of the foxtail, while Dr. Jeff MacLellan surgically removed the entire foxtail and drained the secondary abscess that Dusty’s body formed around it. A culture of the abscess was collected and sent to an external lab for review, meanwhile Dusty was started on a new antibiotic and sent home the same day. The culture results showed three different bacterial organisms, all of which were susceptible to the antibiotics he was prescribed!

We are pleased to announce that Dusty is doing great and is back to his normal and chill self upon finishing his antibiotics and having his sutures removed. Thank you to Dusty’s family for trusting us with his care and allowing us to be a part of his wild medical mystery! Foxtail season is here so please be aware and try to avoid these nasty little invaders!

We see more of this than you’d expect this time of year.

With more time spent outdoors, issues like foxtails, parasites, and environmental toxins become more common.

After walks or outdoor play, a quick check can go a long way in catching problems early.

And if something doesn’t seem right, our team is here to help.

Meet Dr. Erica Moore.

Dr. Moore is one of our board-certified veterinary oncologists who works with pets and their families during some of the most challenging moments in care. She earned both her undergraduate and veterinary degrees from the University of Tennessee, followed by advanced training through internship, research, and residency programs at leading institutions including the University of Pennsylvania and UC Davis.

We often see how overwhelming a cancer diagnosis can feel for pet owners. One of Dr. Moore’s core goals is to help guide those decisions in a way that supports not only treatment, but also quality of life.

Her approach is rooted in ensuring that pets are able to continue doing the things they love, while working closely with families and referring veterinarians to find the best path forward for each individual patient.

A question we hear often: “Can this wait until tomorrow?”

The answer depends on what your pet is experiencing.

We often see cases where symptoms start off mild – vomiting, limping, changes in behavior – but progress more quickly than expected.

Things like repeated vomiting, difficulty breathing, significant lethargy, or signs of pain are all reasons to seek care sooner rather than later.

If you’re unsure, it’s always okay to reach out. Our team is here to help guide you in making the best decision for your pet.
