The walk starts before you open the door. šŸ¾

The leash comes out. Shoes go on. You reach for the doorā€”and your dog is already bouncing, barking, spinning, or pulling.

Those moments are part of the walk, too.

Instead of waiting until youā€™re outside to ask for calm behavior, start practicing it during the routine that leads up to the walk. Pause when they react. Reward calm. Move forward when your dog is ready.

Before your next walk, pay attention to what happens before the door opens. Thatā€™s where your training can begin.

Your dog nails it in the living roomā€¦ then suddenly forgets everything the second you step outside?

Thatā€™s not stubbornness. Itā€™s distraction.

Dogs donā€™t automatically generalize skills from one environment to another. A cue they know at home may feel brand new when you add squirrels, smells, people, traffic, and all the excitement of the outside world.

The fix? Practice the same skills in gradually more distracting places and reward your dog for checking in and staying connected with you.

Training doesnā€™t stop once your dog ā€œknowsā€ a cue. Thatā€™s when the real-world practice begins.
