When I tell you I *ran* to grab my macro lens when I saw this little gal covered in pollen from a Rose of Sharon, I’m not exaggerating. She hung around the same cluster of flowers while I swapped lenses.

Nectar is in low supply now that the main nectar flow of blackberries is over for Oregon, but pollen can still be found in places. This shrub in our backyard constantly has pollinators around it.

Instead of packing pollen in her pollen baskets (her corbiculae) attached to her legs, this pollen is headed back to the hive in a more decorative way 💅🏻.

The first retreat that incorporates the bee hut is in the books! What a great day last week getting to share about the magic of bees, what we can learn from them, and so much more.

There are 2 main ways bee hut visits benefit people:

- The hum. It’s gentle, and at a frequency that helps reset your parasympathetic nervous system and vagus nerve (part of that system).
- Hive air has volatile organic compounds, including antimicrobial propolis particles, terpenes and negative ionized air.

So honored to be included in the Calibration Retreat’s line up!

The bee hut is open through sometime in October, before it goes into hibernation and the bees rest during winter.

3 low or even NO effort ways to help native pollinators and honey bees.

I love working smarter, not harder. Fortunately helping pollinators means often getting to be a little lazy when keeping up with mowing 😏.

Native plants, going longer between mowing, making sure waters available — all my favorite ways to do a little something for my local pollinators.

“How do you inspect the bee hut hives?”

Like this! 🐝

As a beekeeper, I designed this bee hut specifically for more ease, ideally less disruption for the colony (compared to other hive designs), and for bee hut visitors to be as close to the bees as possible.

These are layens hives, and when they’re closed up, the frames butt up against each other. This helps insulate and keep the bees gathered below; they don’t have general access to the top to create any burr comb or propolis in undesirable places.

If you’re in Southern Oregon, around Roseburg, swing by and see things for yourself!

This might be the dumbest thing I’ve ever done 💀.

Not sure this is the correct waggle dance for honey bees. I suspect not.

Also had to choose a trap song from DCC. IYKYK.

Back with a fresh 2026 small batch, hand-bottled, urban harvest of raw wildflower honey 🍯. The Heathen Honey Stand is back open Fri-Sun (or upon advance request), starting TOMORROW 🐝.

Address will be in IG stories, but the stand is also listed on OneStand.

This honey is from foraged flowers right in Roseburg, OR and the surrounding hills.

If you’re buying honey from the store, there’s a real good chance you’re not consuming pure honey. Even if it says it’s bottled in the US — many imports are bottled here but are cut with things like corn syrup before being imported.

🐝This wildflower honey is about as farm-to-table as it gets.🐝

Know where your honey comes from (and also highly recommend meeting the bee hives that make it 🫶🏼).

5.5oz - $7
13.5oz - $14
Quart - $30

CERTIFIED (NATIVE) BEE STEWARD 🐝

Contrary to what some folks drive-by commented on my last bee hut post (that sort of went pretty viral), I do my best to provide environments and opportunities for native pollinators to thrive too. Everything is connected, and I know so many beekeepers who help native species on top of Apis mellifera (the European honey bee).

After completing OSU Extension Service Bee Stewards program, I just got my metal yard sign in the mail yesterday and am stoked to put it up 🤘🏼. This involved learning a huge amount about the over 700 native bee species that are in Oregon alone. It also involved creating habitat plans for local pollinators. The amount of knowledge I’ve gained has been SO fulfilling and I’ve discovered so many sources for native plants, including oregonflora.org, Klamath Siskyou Native Seeds (Roseburg is in the Siskiyou eco region), elderoaksnursery and so many more across the state.

While I was completing this certification, my friend at Fish & Wildlife told me about Bureau of Land Management Oregon & Washington, , and ODFW’s Bee Blitz, where citizen scientists head to Mt. Ashland to try and locate Franklin’s Bumble Bee, which was last seen on the mountain several decades ago.

Does anyone else love when the world’s cogs put things in your path at the exact right time? Already have next year’s Bee Blitz in my calendar 🙌🏼.

Would you sit above 100,000+ bees? 🐝 🐝🐝

I just came from the bee hut, and today’s visitors drove from an hour away in Medford, Oregon. They didn’t even get fully out of the bee hut before saying, “that was absolutely magical.”

Apitherapy doesn’t just mean bee venom. It means being in the presence of these hardworking honey bees, their soothing hum, and the rich sweet aroma of the hive.

Would you sit above 100,000+ bees if you left feeling relaxed, centered, grounded, amazed by the hives below, and could breathe a bit easier from the good hive air?
