Everyone knows bringing a puppy home means loosing sleep! But nighttimes can be more restful if puppies have a predictable pre-bedtime routine that meets their exercise and enrichment needs. Here are 5 easy tips to help your puppy sleep better at night from our P**p School: House Training Basics course.

1. Put a tired puppy to bed. During the evenings plan some relaxing, but tiring activities for your puppy such as: a slow paced snuffle and exploration walk, be sure to stop and sit down occasionally and encourage your puppy to watch the world go by! You can feed your puppy it’s dinner from a pacifier or puzzle toy, and hold a few kibbles back for a late evening training session. Keep the puppy on a buddy leash or gated in the same room as the family for the evening, play some fun games, provide some chews, and enjoy each other’s company.

2. Consistent Bedtime: Puppies will rest better if they have a consistent bedtime, generally the last person to bed will offer the puppy it’s last potty break and put it to bed each night. Be sure to stop offering food and water about 1 hour before the final potty break of the night.

3. If the puppy wakes up in the night, have a consistent potty break routine that does not involve play, treats, or exploration, so the puppy does not learn to wake you up for any reason other than to potty.

4. At first place your puppy’s crate right on your bed, or if too large, right beside your bed. This helps sooth the puppy, avoid separation distress, and ensures someone hears the puppy if it wakes up and needs a potty break.

5. Be consistent in your pre bedtime and overnight routines, your puppy is just a baby and benefits from the security of having it’s needs met predictably.

Puppies raised in a shelter have enough strikes against them, cleanliness doesn’t have to be one of them!

Puppies who have learned to be clean are easier to house train in the new home and more likely to find a lifelong placement.

We were so proud to be one small part of the amazing puppy centric puppy raising work done by the dedicated puppy raisers at the Humane Society of Blue Ridge Georgia when they recently found themselves raising the most adorable litter of puppy hounds. ❤️

We are so proud of P**p School student Bonita Ash from the Human Society of Blue Ridge Georgia for the excellent work she and her team of helpers have done implementing P**p School’s cleanliness training with a litter of puppies admitted to their shelter.

Raising puppies in a shelter is hard work, helping puppies learn clean habits not only keeps them healthier and frees up caregiver time for socialization, but puppies who learn to prefer being clean and the skills needed to be clean are easier to House train and have more secure long term outcomes. A win for these puppies!

Bonita says.

“So proud of our puppies and the p**p school teaching. We had to move our shelter pups into 2 runs. 4 in each. (they are 71/2 weeks old) overnight they barely made a mess out of the litter pans. Boys were messier than the girls. Our set up is not ideal as we really don't have a space big enough to raise pups but we have a large play area outside and they get masses of attention. This is far better than previous litters who tore up p*e pads as they got older and never really stuck to one area to potty. We are thrilled.”

We are thrilled too and so glad our course will help play a small part in the long term success of these puppies. Great work to the dedicated staff at the Humane Society of Blue Ridge Georgia. 👍

Did you know cleanliness training can start as early as 2 weeks? Just by giving puppies defined resting and toileting areas puppies can start to learn it’s good to be clean.

P**p School student Deb Buckingham of The Shihtzu’s of Kingbridge Farm posted this great picture of her puppies enjoying a cooling station.

Cooling stations, like this cooling mat, are a great way to offer puppies a cool play to rest outside of the litter box. This reinforces that rest occurs away from waste and creates a preference for cleanliness in our puppies.

Good job Deb!

Do you have a cooling station (for warm natured puppies) or a warming station (for cold natured puppies) installed for your puppies? If so I would love to see them, so drop a photo in the comments.

Creating successful house training habits involves habits for both puppy, and it’s caregivers!

Supervised potty breaks are important, but so is positive reinforcement for proper potty habits.

But puppy caregivers often struggle with remembering to go WITH the puppy on potty breaks and taking treats and a clicker with them so they can mark the desired behavior (potty outside) and reinforce that so it happens more often in the future.

To help humans be successful (and so puppy being successful) create a success station by any door the puppy uses to exit the house to potty. Here is how!

1. Use an empty flip top container, or water bottle, with an opening large enough for small treats (I use dry cat food mixed with Cheerios).

2. Using Command Adhesive Poster Hanger secure a clicker to the flip top container.

3. Using a Command Adhesive Picture Hanger (the ones with Velcro) secure one side to the wall (be sure this is safe for your wall surface by reading the Command Adhesive Instructions) and the other side to your flip top container.

4. Hang the container via the Command Adhesive Velcro on the wall near the door.

5. Grab the removable treat container each time you take your puppy outside for a potty break. You are now ready to Click when the puppy finishes voiding, and treat right after that.

Don’t forget to stick it back to the wall when you go inside!

Also handy for quick training sessions at doorways, when visitors arrive, and etc!

Do your puppies rest or sleep in their litter box? If so, try creating a cooling station using a cooling mat placed on their resting zone. Puppies will often try to cool off by laying in the litter box, but we don’t want puppies to become accustomed to sleeping in or near waste. by creating a cooling zone we give our puppies a place to cool off if they are warm, fostering clean habits that can last a lifetime.
