There is so much controversy in today's veterinary world on spaying and neutering and to be honest, I just don't get it. Why in the heck are we doing more and more to confuse not only clients but ourselves?
I have been in practice for almost thirty years, three decades, and alll in the same place so I take care of dogs for their entire lives. The clinic has been open for almost 20 years now and we see a lot of animals and we take care of a lot of animals for their entire lives.
If I saw all the stuff going wrong with them that they say is going to happen if you spay or neuter your dog, I would absolutely be shouting it or writing about it. The thing is, I do not see all the issues that they say are going to happen if you spay or neuter your dog or do it before it is a certain age.
What I see are couch potato dogs getting hurt at increasing rates and a lot of them still have their parts and yet they are tearing their cruciate, breaking their bones, having issues. It is not the removal of their nuts or ovaries that are causing the problem in my opinion but the over processed, preserved, incredibly inflammatory food, and the lack of exercise.
Thirty years ago I was spaying and neutering 4-8 week old animals all the time. Didn't see the issues. Twenty years ago I decided that I didn't like doing them really young and went back to the standard of six months and I didn't see and don't see all the issues they claim are going to happen.
A decade ago I started seeing very young animals that came in with torn ligaments and it has become increasingly common. Why in the heck is a year old dog tearing its cruciate? It used to be a middle to old dog issue and now it is an every dog issue and it doesn't have to do with them having their parts or not having them in my opinion.
We have been poisoning our ground and our plants and our water for so many decades now that all of us are wrecks. Our animals live a fraction of the life span we do so if all the junk is killing us faster and creating greater cancer risks, what in the heck do you think it is doing to our animals that age so much faster than we do?
The best thing for your dog is to have it spayed or neutered. Whether you do it at 6 months or 12 months I don't really care but just have it done for their overall health and to keep accidental litters from happening. Feed them a whole foods diet if you can afford it. Get out and get more exercise for them and for you, it will help you both. Stop making everything about them and creating horrible anxiety in them and let them just be the dog that God created them to be. Trust me, they will still love you if you don't be their sole source of love and entertainment.
Please, the world is so full of dogs and cats and veterinary care is getting more and more expensive so maybe it is time to put their needs before ours and have them spayed and neutered to decease the over pet population so we are not killing more than have homes. And, and remember who is ultimately making the most money off of your pet by it being sick and needing care and it is not the vet but rather the people who make the treatments and the supplements and pay for the research.
