So you want to be a breeder??
If you want to breed prepare...
Research the pedigrees completing the health testing, know you dogs likes and dislikes. Learnt heir temperament. Know their flaws. Pick a mate according to strength the flaws. Breed better than what you have. As a general rule our girls are usually interested in a male around day 10 of heat. Heats are from the moment you see blood, if no blood look for swelling. It helps to have them close by so they can get aquatinted with each other.
If she displays uninterested behaviors remove the male. Do not allow him to harass her. We usually allow a meeting once a day to see if there's any interest. Look for signs of she's interested.
Prepare for a uterus infection/ males get utis too it's not guaranteed but it happens.
Prepare ultimate nutrition for your mom's. Their diet needs to sustain them and feed their babies. High calorie diets are required. Worm your bitch if you haven't already to ensure they receive all the nutrients they will need. Wait about 4 weeks to see if she's showing. Count 60 days from the breeding date. About a week before Mom is due wormer again. Puppies need to be strong to survive the birthing process it's very stressful for everyone involved. Moms will be digging holes 😅. Towards the end of pregnancy girls will need constant food with no restrictions. They have limited space in their tummy and you never know when they will want a snack! We don't x ray simply because sick dogs go to the vet and there's a good chance mom can pick up cooties. 🤷 Prepare Mom's birthing place. You need to be able to control temperature and easily sanitized and ventilation. Give mom old towels and blankets to destroy through the birthing process. You should have several things on hand.
Like, hand towels, puppy milk replacer. Puppy bottles, tube feeding kit. Hand towels many! Lots of Tums 1000 mg. Heat lamps, baby wipes, Clorox wipes. E coli is present in the birthing process. Let them nest, feed the instincts. Carefully monitor mom. Once the girls don't want to eat expect puppies within 12-24 hours now your on puppy watch and mom should stay in welping area with frequent supervised walks. Once the first puppy is born Mom will need constant supervision. Give mom Tums after 1st puppy is born. And Tums after every few puppies. This helps her have energy throughout the process and provides calcium so she doesn't have any problems. Also sometimes girls get heart burn or tummy aches and they help. After each puppy is born you should inspect each puppy and make sure they don't have fluid in their lungs. You shouldn't hear a popping noise. If you see the puppy mouthing like they are trying to cough or throw up they have fluids. Hold puppy upside down and gently move back legs to tummy and away. Wipe away any fluids from puppies face. Gently pinch the back of puppies neck to get a cry to help clear the fluids. If puppy doesn't cry repeat process to remove fluids. Sometimes you need to cut the cord or open the puppies sack. Make sure each puppy nurses. Mother dogs make colostrum and the puppies will need it to survive the next few weeks. When you cut the puppies cord it should between their knees but above the foot. If there's active blood cut where it's white to keep from excessive blood loss. It's important moms clean their babies from the birthing process this is a bonding experience between Mom and babies. Only interfere when a puppy is drowning in the sack and has fluids. And once puppy is ok place back with Mom to clean. Make sure every puppy nurses!!! Sometimes moms will push them away from immediately nursing because this also stimulates contractions. Pet your girls back and tummy towards the tail. Sometimes you can place you hand there to give her a bit more pushing power so she can push against your hand. Moms are usually restless the first few puppies so it's important to make sure moms don't burry puppies in blankets or sit on them. Moms usually settle down a bit after the first few puppies have arrived. Moms should reposition as needed. Puppies should arrive 30 mins to an hour apart. If mom is pushing and no babies there's a problem. Sometimes you need to retrieve a puppy in the birth canal. Research proper techniques. Try to get all placentas out with each puppy. Sometimes moms stop pushing once puppy is free. 😅 Keep count if a puppy comes out without the placenta. If they do not all come out mom will develop a life threatening infection. Usually after Mom has 3-6 puppies a walk is necessary maybe she needs to p*e or p**p and it's keeping her from her best. It's best to have help. Place new born puppies in a clean basket outside of the welping area and use them to get Mom to leave. Take Mom out. While mom is out doing her thing quickly reprepare the welping area. This needs to be completed in just a few minutes, she's still in active labor and could potentially have another baby on the way outside 😱. Place new clean dry towels and place puppies back in welping area under heat lamp in a puppy pile and prepare Tums for Mom for when she returns. Leashing mom for this process is best. Let Mom back in and reunited with her babies. No go through the house and clean up discharge mopping. Hose off patio. Back to moms side as the journey continues.
Once mom lays down place all the babies by her side. And wait. Depending on the time of day it could be 6pm,3am or 8am. 😅 That's what puppy watch means. Do not leave your girls side. Quiet places help mom feel safe. Also before this process you can check Mom's temp. Labor begins after her temperature dips below 100. But Ive always used off the food as my indicator. Walking every 3-4 hours for Mom. This also helps the puppies move along in the birthing canal to sp*ed up the process. Obviously if there are problems during birth taking mom to vet or ER vet. Now monitor mom and babies. If puppies are excessively crying pick puppy up for Mom to clean maybe the babies need to be stimulated by Mom to relieve their bowels or place puppy close to nurse. There's about 1000 different scenarios where something goes wrong so be prepared. You can check weights and weigh daily to make sure they are gaining. We don't like collars on puppies this young. 🤷 Puppies should appear plump and active and quiet. That's how you know all needs are met. Usually Mom isn't hungry for a few days after welp if she ate most of the placentas. The placentas are basically vitamins for Mom while it's gross if they want to eat a few let them. Placentas are usually dark red purpleish black color, slimy mucus package. Gloves through the process are important. Placentas stain your hands and clothes and towels. 😅 If your area isn't well vented everything will smell like placentas. 😂 In about 2-3 days mom should regain appetite. Moms should lay down and relaxed. If moms are sitting on t***s or curled up in a ball she needs tums. Again we give Tums every 3-4 hours everyday until puppies are weaned usually 3 Tums helps moms glucose depending on size and breed. 🤷
Check Mom's t***s everyday. They should all be warm and squishy. If you feel ANY hard lumps take Mom to vet for mastitis. You can check her temperature. it shouldn't be any higher than 102. If it's higher she has an infection somewhere. Keep Mom in car until vet office is prepared. Take her straight to a room. Do not allow her to socialize around stranger dogs. She will be very anxious about leaving her babies. Don't let random people or other dogs harass her. Leave babies at home unless there's a problem with babies. New born puppies can not maintain their body temperatures. If a puppies temperature drops they are no longer able to digest their food or eat. You should probably have a car heating pad just in case it's ever needed. Bring an office heating pad too just in case. Make sure puppies are warm, perhaps a basket or a tote with a cover to keep them protected. Don't let random people touch the new born puppies. 🤷 You don't know why they are at the vet. Clavamaox is top shelf for moms and puppies. 😉🙌 We usually take Mom to vet after welp or a few days after welp for check ups assuming no visit is needed prior. We are usually at the vet within the first week of welp 😂.
Sincerely,
