13-year-old Shepherd. Bad hips. Then a table falls… and shatters the tibia right at the ankle joint.

This is where things get unforgiving.

Small fragments. Limited bone. Zero margin for error.

Using intraoperative fluoroscopy and orthogonal locking plates, we rebuilt the joint with the accuracy needed for early weight-bearing.

Think of it like operating with Google Maps instead of memory.

Precision matters.

Oh the kids…
They thought it was funny to wave a baited fish hook in front of the dog—until it disappeared.

The hook lodged in the esophagus, which is a challenging and unforgiving environment for retrieval.

A custom sheath was fashioned from a trimmed GDV tube, allowing controlled protection of the mucosa. Using combined fluoroscopic and endoscopic guidance, the hook was removed atraumatically.

No bleeding. No damage. Excellent outcome.

Progress doesn’t come from doing the same thing over and over. It comes from questioning it, refining it, and sharing it.

I publish because every case is an opportunity to push the field forward. Not just to report outcomes, but to challenge assumptions and improve what we do for the next patient.

In this piece, we looked at our osseointegration bionic limb cases. What worked, what didn’t, and how those lessons are shaping better protocols, better function, and better lives for our patients.

Real progress lives in the details. And the responsibility to share them.

This week, Dr. Levien of OsseoVet teamed up with outstanding neurology and anesthesia colleagues in California to remove a rare and complex skull tumor encasing the brain (multilobular osteochondrosarcoma, MLO).

To plan the surgery, we 3D-printed the patient’s skull, the black model you can see in the photo, allowing us to study the anatomy, plan margins, and rehearse the approach before stepping into surgery.

We’re pleased to report that the procedure was a great success, highlighting how advanced planning, technology, and true multidisciplinary collaboration can translate into better outcomes for patients.

Grateful to work alongside such an exceptional team.

Dr Andrew Levien of OsseoVet recently took a trip to Honolulu to mentor and perform the first total hip replacements in a long time in the state of Hawaii with colleague Dr Nate Lam. We are pleased to report both cases were a success 👍👍. Here they are one day post operative. 🐶

Meet Mojo! Mojo is a 3-year-old border collie who came to see Dr Andrew S. Levien for a total hip replacement after being diagnosed with hip dysplasia. Mojo had been experiencing worsening hind-leg lameness, making it difficult for him to move around without pain and discomfort. This beautiful boy is now 6 months post-op and can run, jump, and do all his usual activities pain-free thanks to our amazing surgery team!

“Even better than the real thing” -u2 ….!
This Maverick (& his cousin) owned by one our referring veterinary friends who had a left total hip replacement to treat severe arthritis! He is currently doing great!

Meet Mandela, the very brave 6-month-old Greyhound pup! He recently fractured his scapula while enjoying some high-speed play on a rearing property.

Greyhounds can reach speeds of up to 72km/hr, just a tad slower than a cheetah! Mandela unfortunately shattered his scapula from the injury and sustained a pneumothorax. Our surgery team drained the air from his chest and plated his scapula so Mandela is now on the road to recovery!

Let's send him all the love and well wishes for a speedy recovery! ❤️
