Conversations about weight aren’t meant to shame anyone. They’re about health, wellness, mobility, longevity, and quality of life for our dogs.

Dogs rely on us to make decisions for them — their exercise, nutrition, portion sizes, enrichment, and lifestyle. Weight can slowly creep up over time without us even realizing it.

This conversation should come from a place of care, not judgment. Because keeping a dog at a healthy weight can literally help them live a longer, healthier, more comfortable life.

We need a communication system with our dogs.

Dogs are physical creatures. They communicate through body language, movement, spatial pressure, leash pressure, energy, and follow-through. For a dog coming from the streets, I’ve found this is often the most raw and natural way to communicate.

It’s not about being harsh. It’s about being clear.

When words don’t mean anything yet, our body language does. Our timing does. Our movement does. The way we guide, block, release, reward, and create structure teaches the dog how to understand us and what we want to communicate.

Clear communication builds trust. Structure creates safety. And once a dog understands what we’re asking, they can finally start to relax.
