kansas with my partner and our pack of 4 beloved rescue dogs - a Pitte/Chow mix, a Pittie mix, an American Bully, and a Presa Canario mix. Tuesday Training Tip: Preventing Reactivity with Better Choices

Does your dog struggle with reactivity? You might be unknowingly setting them up for failure with common social interactions. Here’s why and how to do better:

1. On-Leash Dog Meetings:
Leashes create tension and prevent natural interactions, leading to frustration, guarding, or bullying. Pushy dogs overpower softer ones, and timid dogs feel trapped. Skip on-leash introductions — they rarely end well.

2. Poorly Supervised Doggy Daycare:
In many daycares, pushy, bratty dogs bully soft or fearful ones because no one is managing the dynamics. Dogs learn bad habits in these environments, from bullying to shutting down. Choose facilities with knowledgeable staff who structure interactions and advocate for every dog.

3. Dog Parks:
These uncontrolled environments are a breeding ground for problems. Overly aroused dogs overwhelm sensitive ones, and there’s no escape. The result? Bullies become bigger bullies, and timid dogs lose trust in others.

4. Leadership-Free Living:
Even without exposure to the above scenarios, your dog can develop reactivity if their daily life lacks structure and leadership. Pushy dogs get bratty, and nervous dogs grow more anxious when no one is showing them how to behave. Reactivity thrives in chaos, but it dissolves with calm, consistent guidance.

The Fix:
Avoid putting your dog in environments that allow bullying or fear to fester. Focus on teaching neutral, calm behavior around other dogs by leading with confidence and clarity. Even if your dog has already developed reactivity, it can be reversed. Start today by stepping up as the leader your dog needs.

Tuesday Training Tip: Rethink Social Interactions

Not all dog socialization is good socialization. Some common setups can do more harm than good, creating reactivity issues or amplifying bad behaviors. Let’s break it down:

1️⃣ On-Leash Meetings
Leashes create tension and restraint, setting the stage for unnatural, often negative interactions. Pushy dogs push boundaries, softer dogs become defensive, and even balanced dogs can lose their middle ground.

2️⃣ Doggy Daycare Troubles
Without proper supervision, daycare dynamics can mimic on-leash problems. Pushy dogs dominate, while timid dogs are overwhelmed, with no escape. This leads to learned bullying or lasting fear.

3️⃣ Dog Parks
Uncontrolled chaos often reigns in dog parks. Over-aroused, bullying dogs meet timid, fearful ones in confined spaces, resulting in trauma, fights, or worse.

4️⃣ The Root Problem: Leadership
Even without exposure to the scenarios above, dogs can develop reactivity due to a lack of structure and leadership at home. A chaotic or permissive lifestyle allows pushy dogs to get pushier and nervous dogs to stay fearful. Balanced behavior starts with balanced leadership.

The Solution:
Skip environments that encourage unhealthy interactions and focus on setting your dog up for success. Teach them how to stay calm, neutral, and responsive under your guidance. Even if issues have already developed, proper leadership can reverse reactivity and rebuild trust.

Good socialization isn’t about quantity — it’s about quality and ensuring your dog feels safe and understood.

Is your dog displaying unwanted behaviors like destructiveness, aggression, or guarding space in your home? Here’s the hard truth: your dog likely has too much freedom they haven’t earned yet.

Freedom within the home isn’t a given—it’s a privilege your dog should earn through good behavior and structure.

Here’s how you can establish leadership and create a positive environment:
• Use a crate when you can’t directly supervise.
• Keep a leash on indoors to guide and redirect your dog as needed.
• Be consistent—your behavior sets the tone for your dog’s.

About Us

At Canine Connection we offer Boarding And Training for your Canine Companion. We use a balanced training approach for obedience and behavior correction. Our focus is on pet dog obedience and keeping dogs in their homes.

I have spent the last 10 years working with dogs in rescue/sheltering. I have seen dogs surrendered for behavior issues and this is what led me to dog training. I knew there had to be a better way. I began studying training methods. I have worked with and trained under a variety of trainers, local and internationally known, to develop my knowledge and skills. The more tools I add to my skill set, the more I can add to yours!

My goal is to help dog owners have a good relationship with their dogs, to keep dogs in their homes, and give dog owners the skills to be successful.
