Bringing a new puppy into your home is an exciting and joyful experience—but it also comes with important responsibilities. Just like human babies, puppies go through rapid growth and development in their first year of life, and the care they receive during this time can have a lasting impact on their health and well-being.

Preventive puppy care is about much more than vaccines. Early veterinary visits allow us to monitor growth, check for congenital or developmental concerns, and make sure your puppy is thriving at every stage. Regular exams help catch potential issues early—often before they become serious or costly problems later in life.

Vaccinations and parasite prevention play a critical role in protecting puppies from dangerous and sometimes life-threatening diseases. Puppies’ immune systems are still developing, which makes them more vulnerable to illnesses like parvovirus, distemper, and intestinal parasites. Staying on a proper preventive schedule helps keep your puppy safe while their immune system grows stronger.

These early visits are also a perfect time to talk about nutrition, behavior, socialization, training, dental care, and spay/neuter planning. Every puppy is unique, and personalized guidance can help prevent common issues such as obesity, dental disease, anxiety, and joint problems down the road.

Perhaps most importantly, preventive care helps your puppy build positive associations with veterinary visits. Gentle handling, routine checkups, and familiar faces can reduce fear and stress, making future visits easier for both you and your dog.

By investing in preventive puppy care now, you’re giving your newest family member the best possible start—and setting the stage for many healthy, happy years together. šŸ’™šŸ¶

Shout out to Dr. Swanson for helping another turtle!

This female yellow-bellied slider was reported to have swallowed a fish hook which was confirmed with X-rays.

Dr. Swanson was able to surgically remove the hook so she can be rehabilitated and hopefully released!
