“Playing fetch and tug can be the best or worse things you can do with your dog.”

Clients often ask me why I say this... To simplify the whole concept. You are either rewarding your dog for being crazy and encouraging that adrenaline loading behavior OR you are encouraging your dog to switch gears from crazy brain to obedient brain and from prey drive to pack drive. Dogs need this mental and physical energy drain, so they are absolutely a benefit IF they are done correctly.

The late great Martin Deeley (one of Cesar Milan’s best mentors) showed me how to use fetch as a great way to help dogs in so many aspects of their life such as emotional base line behavior, manners and obedience. We have had many great mentors since then and most of our clients use these principles to help create their own balanced, well behaved dogs.

We would love to talk with you about how the right type of program that focuses on mental training and commands can be the ticket you’ve been looking for. After all, if your dog knows 10 commands, but can’t perform any of them when distracted or overexcited.... they might as well have not known them to start with, right?

A treadmill exercise can be a good way to help dogs burn off physical and mental energy, especially for high-energy breeds, by providing a controlled and safe outlet for their energy.

* Start Slowly: Introduce your dog to the treadmill gradually, starting with short sessions and slowly increasing the duration and speed.

* Supervise Closely: ALWAYS supervise your dog while they are on the treadmill to ensure their safety.

* Keep it Fun: Make treadmill time a positive experience for your dog by keeping sessions short, fun, and rewarding.

* Consult with a Veterinarian: If you have any concerns about your dog’s health or ability to use a treadmill, consult with your veterinarian.

This is Rover, chilling after his lesson. He is enrolled in our TransFURmation program and doing an awesome job, learning how to accept “No” and not dragging his owners everywhere!

Spring is here and many of you would like to take your dog out in public but can’t because of the pulling, lunging/reactivity, over excitement, fearfulness, etc. We totally understand and we help clients change all of this all the time. A dog should bring less stress to your life (as we should to theirs), not more.

Teaching a dog to make eye contact on command can be a valuable tool for obedience training, as it reinforces the dog’s responsiveness to cues and commands. By rewarding eye contact, you can teach your dog that focusing on you is valuable, which can help improve their focus and impulse control, especially in distracting situations.
