This year, Rice's is undertaking something new and exciting. At this year's Monroe County Fair 4-H animal auction, we purchased all the animals that were bid on by local businesses, but which they did not want to actually keep. The meat from these animals will be sold in our store, with each label noting which student raised the meat, and which local business or individual supported the student by purchasing the animal at auction.

K&S Rolloff is one of the businesses that supported quite a few 4-H students by purchasing their animals at auction including hogs, sheep, goats, and beef. K&S is a locally owned and family operated business with over 30 years of waste management experience.

If you want to enjoy a cut of meat locally-raised in the 4-H program, stop in at Rice's and grab some while it is available! We've been stocking our freezer with freshly-processed pork, and will be adding lamb, goat, and beef in the coming weeks as well.

⚠️ Black Bear Watch Midland and Upton Counties⚠️
TPWD biologists have received multiple reports of a young male bear, likely a dispersing juvenile, in Midland and Upton Counties. Bears prefer to avoid people whenever possible, and this individual will likely travel through the area quickly. Alert your neighbors and local TPWD Biologist or Game Warden to any bear sightings or human-bear conflict in your area.
⚠️If you encounter a bear:👇
🚫 Never approach or feed a bear.
💨Make sure the bear has a clear escape route – Do not corner a bear.
❌ Never run from a bear – back away slowly and leave the area.
📣 From a safe distance, make loud noises, shout, set off a car alarm, bang pots and pans – anything to make noise – help bears associate people with negative stimulus.
👋 Make yourself look big – raise and wave your arms.
🔒 When the bear leaves, secure or remove any attractants.
🗣Ask neighbors to secure or remove any attractants.
📞 Report the sighting to TPWD staff.

My recent post about jacals and how ingenious their construction and design features are has led me down a pathway of great knowledge acquisition that in turn led to all kinds of cool photos, like this one, taken in 1908 somewhere in the Rio Grande Valley. I read that, with periodic re-thatching or "re-palming" of their roofs, well-constructed jacals can last decades—sometimes even a century or more—depending on materials used and the local climate. There is documented evidence of at least two jacals in South Texas that lasted more than a century. They are quite sturdy and quite practical.
