Bruno’s owners have learned fast how to help him to feel more confident and less frustrated.

He showed up a bit unsure, lacked awareness of the human end of the leash, and would blow a fuse fast.

He’d gotten in trouble with other dogs and they didn’t want to walk him.

He’s got work to do, but he’s real close to neutral, is more confident and he’s looking pretty steady.

Onward.

A lot of misbehavior, like leash reactivity and poor obedience could be improved greatly by improving the human’s leash handling.

A lot of the trainers that go to maximum tool usage as a starting point with every dog end up teaching a high pressure, crank and yank approach.

You should use the right pressures to help your dog learn and settle in. The goal is a very light leash, or even no leash pressure at all.

Your arm, shoulder and back will thank you, your dog will be off-leash reliable faster, and they’ll be happier.

How do dogs think? Like dogs. Not like humans. They're more instinct and sensory driven, and they have no written language. That means that you need to think more like they do so you can work with your dog like a dog. Then, you'll make incredible progress.

Seriously, you do the same things. There are no secrets to training a small dog. They're dogs, just like the big ones. But they're small.

Sometimes not doing anything will be the best option with a difficult behavior. We all want to know what to do. A good dog trainer will be able to guide you on when the best thing to do is nothing.

If you're giving in or trying to soothe your dog when they're acting out, you're likely rewarding and affirming the dog's behavior.

Getting close to finished with Nelly. His mom has committed to the plan to resolve his leash reactivity, stayed on course and had a ton of peaceful passes today with my boy Jax as the help.

We started with teaching him his basic obedience skills, affected his mindset so he wants AND knows he needs to listen, and then folded in strategies to help him keep it together so he can have the experience of a fun, happy, non reactive walk.

He’s looking pretty good, and we’ll put him through one or two more tests to make sure they’re set.

Don't bubble wrap your dog, but don't be a jerk. Be strong enough that your dog will respect and WILLINGLY go along with you. Teach your dog so they can trust your guidance. They'll settle down, behave better and their life will get a lot bigger and better. Leash reactivity shouldn't be a life sentence.

Pascal and his owner have shown dedication and put in great work to help him be less reactive. As a Great Pyrenees, he’s got a stubborn and independent streak to him, while also being a great dog with an awesome personality.

I drafted in my girl Sienna to give him a new look, since he’s struggled with shepherds in the past. He looks pretty good. He can still be a little unsure, and he was getting warm, but the guy did a great job today.

Genetics rule all, but *almost* all dogs can be non reactive. Leash reactivity is everywhere now, when it wasn't when I was growing up. The dogs didn't get worse. We stopped giving them what they need.

Had extra time, so we worked on the minimum skills for any dog, but especially dogs prone to reactivity. I put a huge emphasis on a down under max conditions with the owner away from the dog. Impulse control, listening skills, stability. Don't force it. Teach it. Now we're really dog training.
