Let's talk about pulling and a tool that can make a world of difference! Most owners think they need to pull harder, buy a shorter leash, or just “hope” their dog grows out of pulling. But often, the issue isn’t effort—it’s the tool.

In this video, we start with Ember on a flat collar. She’s pulling, distracted, and taking her owner for a ride. This is the point where many owners give up on walks altogether, which is a disservice to both dog and human.

Then, we switch to a prong collar. Nothing else changes. Same dog. Same handler. Same environment. The difference you see is simply because the prong collar gives clear, safe, self-correcting feedback that makes sense to the dog. The walk becomes calmer, more focused, and safer for everyone.

At the end, Ember calmly passes a dog that is heavily reacting beside her. Her attention peaks, but she’s able to disengage and stay neutral because she can understand what’s being asked of her.

Tools matter. When used properly and paired with leash guidance, the prong collar can create immediate, positive change—making walks something you look forward to instead of dread.

If you’re struggling with pulling or lack of control on walks, you don’t have to give up. The right tool and training makes all the difference.

First and foremost, small dogs deserve training too!!

Teaching your dog a strong leave-it starts with helping them physically understand the behavior before ever adding a verbal cue.

In this exercise, we show the dog a treat in our right hand (closed fist). When the dog chooses to disengage from that hand, we mark and reward with a treat from the other hand.

This teaches them two important things:

1) The reward doesn’t come from the thing they’re told to leave alone.

2) The payoff comes from disengaging and looking back to you.

Dogs learn first through physical experience and repetition, not words — which is why we don’t add the verbal “leave it” yet. At this stage, it’s a game of cause and effect: “When I move away from this hand, I get rewarded from the other one.”

Start with clarity, build consistency, and communication will follow.

When this owner first came to me, she mentioned that multiple trainers had told her that her dog was one of the worst pullers they had ever seen.

In this video, you’ll see a small piece of the transformation — from a dog that was disengaged, unfocused, and constantly pulling, to one walking calmly on a loose leash and focused on her owner — all within the very first session.

The difference came from using the right approach: we transitioned from a flat collar to a properly fitted slip lead, taught the dog how to understand leash pressure, and helped the owner step into the walk with confidence and clarity.

When we use the proper tools correctly, we can communicate more clearly and effectively with our dogs. Pair that with confident handling, and our dogs begin to look to us for direction — turning frustration into teamwork.

Three universal dog training truths I’ve learned over the years:

1. If your dog is having problems in the home, put a leash on them.A leash is one of the most underrated training tools when it comes to creating structure and calmness indoors. It gives you the ability to control and guide your dog’s behavior in real time—whether that’s stopping them from jumping, preventing destructive habits, or helping them learn how to relax through tethering. The leash creates accountability and communication, two things that are often missing when dogs act out at home.

2. If your dog doesn’t listen to “no,” it’s probably because you haven’t given them a reason to.Repetition without meaning causes confusion. When we tell our dogs “no” over and over without follow-through, the word loses its value. For your dog to truly understand and respect “no,” it must always be paired with a clear consequence or redirection—something that teaches them what behavior is expected instead. Consistency is what makes your words matter.

3. If you’re using your voice to reassure your dog when they’re anxious, you might actually be making them more anxious.Dogs don’t understand the words “it’s okay”—they understand tone, energy, and body language. When your voice becomes soft or nervous in an attempt to comfort them, you’re actually confirming their belief that something is wrong. Instead of verbal reassurance, show calm, confident leadership through your actions. That’s what truly helps a dog feel safe and secure.

Yes this is an anti dog park post.

Taking your dog to the dog park because they have trouble socializing is like taking your introverted friend to a party to make them more outgoing — it doesn’t really work that way.

When dogs are uncomfortable or anxious around others, exposing them to chaotic environments can do more harm than good. Instead of helping, it often increases stress and reactivity.

True socialization isn’t about constant interaction — it’s about creating calm, neutral experiences around other dogs. Controlled setups, structured walks, and low-pressure exposure are where confidence is built.

Proper socialization is one of the most misunderstood parts of raising and training a dog. Many people think it means letting their dog meet every person and dog they come across, but that approach can actually create overstimulation, reactivity, or anxiety.

True socialization is about teaching your dog how to be neutral. It’s about building confidence, stability, and calm behavior in different environments—without needing to interact with every distraction around them.

If socialization is your goal, we create controlled, safe setups that help dogs learn to exist comfortably near others, rather than feeling pressured to engage. When done right, proper socialization sets the foundation for a well-balanced, confident dog.

✨Building calm, confident, and connected walks✨

In this session, we focused on helping our client’s dogs stay neutral when faced with everyday distractions like other dogs walking nearby.

We worked on:

• Proper leash handling and pressure
• How to hold your dog accountable for pulling
• Staying engaged and communicative throughout the walk
• Safely walking next to a stroller for real-life practice

The goal? A peaceful, enjoyable walk for both dogs and their human. When we create clarity and consistency, our dogs can relax and just enjoy the experience.
