We headed to VT to show this weekend and she received Select Bit@h at the shows we attended…. A few days we skipped to enjoy the sights and to head to Vt Teddy Bear … we also got to spend a quick moment w/ a dear friend to catch up 🥰 such an amazing weekend 🩷🧡♥️

Today I turn 52, and for the first time in a long time, I’m truly excited about the year ahead.

This past year has changed me in ways I never expected—not just physically, but mentally as well. I’ve become stronger, healthier, more confident, and more intentional about how I spend my time and energy. I’ve learned that growth isn’t always comfortable, but it’s always worth it.

I’ve discovered that it’s okay to let go of what no longer serves me, to protect my peace, and to invest in the people and passions that bring genuine joy. Every challenge taught me something, and every step—whether forward or backward—helped shape the person I am today.

As I begin my 53rd year of life, I’m choosing excitement over fear, gratitude over regret, and possibility over limitation. There are still dreams to chase, lessons to learn, dogs to raise and show, places to explore, and memories waiting to be made.

Thank you to everyone who has been part of my journey. Your encouragement, friendship, and support have meant more than you know.

Here’s to another year of becoming an even better version of myself. Chapter 52 was incredible… but I have a feeling the best is still ahead.

EARLY SPAY/NEUTER — PLEASE DO YOUR DUE DILIGENCE

As preservation breeders and responsible dog owners, our goal should always be to make informed decisions—not simply convenient ones.

Growing research suggests that spaying or neutering large- and giant-breed dogs before skeletal maturity may increase the risk of several orthopedic, endocrine, and certain cancer-related conditions. Every breed is different, and every dog deserves an individualized discussion with a knowledgeable veterinarian.

Things to Consider Before Early Spay/Neuter

Joint & Musculoskeletal Development

* S*x hormones help regulate normal bone growth and cartilage development.
* Early removal of these hormones may delay growth plate closure.
* Studies have found increased rates of hip dysplasia and other orthopedic disorders in some breeds when altered before maturity.

Cruciate Ligament Injuries

* Dogs altered before skeletal maturity have been shown in some studies to be significantly more likely to suffer cranial cruciate ligament tears.

Cancer Risks
Research in certain breeds has linked early spay/neuter with increased risks of cancers including:

* Osteosarcoma (bone cancer)
* Hemangiosarcoma
* Lymphoma
* Mast cell tumors

Research also suggests:

* Early-neutered males may have an increased risk of certain cancers.
* Timing of spaying in females can influence mammary tumor risk, depending on breed and age at surgery. This should be discussed with your veterinarian.

Hormonal & Endocrine Health

* Increased risk of hypothyroidism has been reported in some studies.
* Hormones influence metabolism, immune function, muscle development, cardiovascular health, and overall well-being.

Urinary Incontinence

* Early-spayed females have a higher risk of developing urinary incontinence later in life.

Behavior
Hormones play an important role in:

* Confidence
* Emotional resilience
* Social maturity
* Decision-making

Behavioral outcomes vary by dog, but some studies have found higher rates of fearfulness, anxiety, and certain undesirable behaviors following early sterilization.

It Is Major Surgery
Spay/neuter requires:

* General anesthesia
* Pain management
* Recovery time

Like any surgical procedure, there are risks of bleeding, infection, anesthetic complications, and post-operative discomfort.

So… When Is the Best Time?

There is no one-size-fits-all answer.

For many medium, large, and giant breeds—including Dobermans—many breeders and veterinarians recommend waiting until physical maturity (often around 18–24 months) unless there is a medical or management reason to alter sooner.

If preventing accidental litters is your concern, responsible ownership and proper management can often accomplish that while allowing your dog to mature naturally.

The decision you make today can affect your dog’s health for years to come.

Do your research.
Ask questions.
Read the available scientific literature.
Talk with veterinarians who are knowledgeable about your breed.
Work with ethical breeders who prioritize long-term health.

A well-informed decision today can help build a healthier tomorrow.

As we count down to the Fourth of July, remember that what feels like celebration to us can be stressful and frightening for our dogs.

Take a few extra minutes this week to prepare:
🐾 Check collars and ID tags to make sure they’re current.
🐾 Create a safe, quiet space indoors away from fireworks.
🐾 Exercise your dogs earlier in the day before festivities begin.
🐾 Keep pets secured inside during fireworks—even the most reliable dogs can panic.

A little preparation today can prevent heartbreak tomorrow. Let’s make this holiday safe for every member of the family, two-legged and four-legged alike. ❤️🇺🇸
