In preparation for Lyme Disease Awareness month - In loving memory of Hemi:
Hemi was a dear patient here at Rockford Animal Hospital who recently passed away from kidney failure at the young age of 3. Hemi was diagnosed with Lyme Disease in November 2023 and passed away November 2024. Although his owner’s pursued all treatment options, he ultimately declined and passed away. His owners would love to bring awareness to the disease and Hemi’s story.
What is Lyme Disease?
Lyme Disease is caused by a bacterium, Borrelia Burgdorferi. It can be transmitted to dogs through the bite of an infected tick. Once in the bloodstream, the Lyme disease organism is carried to many parts of the body, and it is likely to be localized in the joints or kidneys.
Most dogs infected with Lyme disease take two to five months before they show symptoms. Some canines can be symptomatic while others can live asymptomatically.
Diagnoses for Lyme disease includes a blood test at your veterinarians’ office. This test also checks for other tick-borne diseases such as Ehrlichiosis and Anaplasmosis.
Because Lyme disease is a bacterium, it can be treated with antibiotics. However, prevention is key!
Prevention of Lyme disease is limiting your dog’s exposure to ticks. Ticks are found in grassy, wooded, and sandy areas. There are also several topical and chewable products available that can kill these ticks and prevent disease transmission. These products should be given or applied monthly all year round. Vaccination against Lyme disease is recommended for all canines’ patients. This vaccine is initially given twice, at two and four-week intervals. Annual revaccination is necessary to maintain your dog’s immunity.
In summary, the impact of Lyme disease is profound, as illustrated in Hemi’s heartbreaking journey. Through education and awareness, we can work towards better management and prevention of this disease in our canine companions.
By diligently practicing preventative measures and ensuring regular veterinary check-ups, pet owners can safeguard their dogs against the dangers of Lyme disease.
Hemi’s legacy is not just a story of loss, but also a call to action for all dog owners to recognize, prevent, and treat Lyme disease effectively.
