Throw Back Thursday. The Newtown VFD protected the areas of Newtown, Elmhurst, Corona, Woodside, Glendale, Ridgewood, Maspeth, Middle Village and Winfield in what is now the borough of Queens. Pioneer Fire, Hook & Ladder Co. 6 was organized in March of 1890 and was originally called the Corona VFD. They were located at 416 Grand Ave (today 41-15 102 St aka National St). They were both a hose and truck company. The Newtown VFD disbanded on Sept. 1st, 1913. FDNY Engine 289 would move into these quarters when the volunteers were ushered out. On Dec. 1st, 1914 E289 moved into new quarters at 97-28 43rd Ave. The original firehouse of Pioneer 6 still stands today.

On this day in 1903, Richmond Engine Co. 1 of Staten Island was organized for the first time. Shown here is an extremely rare picture of Richmond Engine Co. 1 prior to their re-organization on Sept 5th, 1905. The photo appeared in the New York Tribune in May of 1904. Pictured is their original temporary qtrs and their hand drawn pumper that originally saw service in a Manhattan volunteer Fire Company.

#ᴛʙᴛ Throw Back Thursday

Still standing in the borough of Queens, albeit not at its original location, is a portion of the last quarters of the “Original Big House” of the Far Rockaway VFD. The Far Rockaway VFD at its peak consisted of 4 companies: Mohawk Hose Co. 2 who stood alone at 520 Beach 20th St, along with Oceanic Hose Co. 1, Protective Engine Co. 1 aka Far Rockaway Fire Engine Co. and Protective Hook & Ladder Co. 1, who were consolidated from their previous locations into this 3 bay door firehouse at 16-03 thru 07 Central Ave. The left bay was originally a stand alone building housing the H&L. The two bay door addition was added around 1895, with Oceanic Hose now taking the left bay, center bay Protective H&L, and the right bay Protective Engine. The department disbanded Sept. 1st, 1905 when FDNY Queens Combination Engine 164 (re-numbered E264 in 1913) moved into these quarters. A new 3 bay door firehouse for Engine 264, now joined by Ladder 134, was opened a few doors down at 16-19 Central Ave in 1913. They would later be joined by Engine 328 in 1939. Sometime either during or after the construction of “The New Big House”, the two bay door addition of the original quarters was picked up and moved to 496 Beach 21 St, where it still stands today with additions and modifications.
