🎉 Exciting Update from Evanston! 🎉

The Evanston gas chamber was physically removed from the city shelter today!!!

Today at the city council meeting, Police Chief Mike Vranish said that the city's gas chamber was removed this morning, is now in the scrap pile, and is no longer in the building. This means no more dogs and cats will face a horrible death in the gas chamber at Evanston Animal Control.

Additionally, hopefully, the gas chamber room can be repurposed as cats room, given that Evanston Animal Control currently houses dogs and cats in the same room!

Thanks to Evanston resident Reenda Newman Hoglin for attending the council meeting and courageously asking this important question, as several organizations including us have tried to reach out to the Evanston city council few times for an update but were completely ignored!

No more gas chambers in Wyoming now!!!
Thanks to everyone who helped make this last step possible!

Another important message: please spay and neuter your pets, and please adopt from shelters and don’t buy animals from breeders!

Big News!! Evanston is removing its gas chamber too I!!!🚨

According to the Cowboy State Daily newspaper, just now!

Mayor Kent Williams confirmed that Evanston plans to discontinue the use of its animal euthanasia gas chamber.

This decision follows Green River's recent action and aligns with national calls to end this inhumane practice. Mayor Williams mentioned that the decision was influenced by national outcry and leadership from the local police department.

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who voiced their concerns and to Evanston's leadership for this humane decision.

Evanston's Chief of Police Michael Vranish declared that a ban on using the gas chamber will take effect within a week.

Green River Gas Chamber Dismantled!!

We’ve just got word from the mayor Rust that the gas chamber in Green River has been dismantled and is no longer functional. It’s been dismantled and it has been taken to and received at the dump! This confirms an end to the gassing of our homeless pets in Green River.

We extend our gratitude to the mayor and city council for making this compassionate decision for our shelter animals and choosing kindness over cruelty.

We did it together!!! Thanks a million to everyone who made calls , sent emails and peacefully protested to the ban animal gas chamber euthanasia in Green River and Evanston!!!

After Green River voted to abolish the use of its animal gas chamber earlier this week, the Evanston mayor on Thursday said his city will follow suit.…

🚨 URGENT CALL TO ACTION: TIME TO ACT IS NOW! 🚨

🎉 FINALLY! Tomorrow, Tuesday, October 7, at 7 PM, the Green River City Council will vote on banning the horrific gas chamber at Green River Animal Control.

Please urge them to vote YES to ban this inhumane practice! No homeless pet deserves to be gassed to death!!

Even if you just write an email with the subject line 'Vote Yes on Removing the Gas Chamber,' it will make a difference. If you want to write a detailed message, that would be great, but please, take a moment and reach out. It's now or never!

Over 4,000 shelters across the U.S. have already abolished this cruel method while protecting their employees' mental and physical health. What excuse does Green River Animal Control have for holding onto such outdated brutality?

With the Humane Society of United States (Humane World for Animals) offering a $5,000 grant for a humane transition, financial excuses hold no weight!

This is our critical moment to demand change and champion compassion.

Today, a local newspaper, Green River Star published a powerful letter by resident Dave Yakovich in opposition of the gas chamber.

The letter states that, despite directives from Mayor Rust back in January 2022 to move forward with removing the gas chamber, Green River Animal Control continues its use almost four years later.

The letter points out that using a gas chamber to kill unadoptable shelter animals cannot be justified by Animal Control's claims of protecting staff's physical and mental health. If other shelters across the nation can manage aggressive animals humanely with injections, why can't Green River?

It's time to act!
Call Mayor Rust at 307-871-3175 and ask why this inhumane practice continues in his city after his directive to remove it in January 2022?

Call Green River Animal Control Supervisor Tracy Wyant at 307-872-0570 and ask her to stop making excuses to justify the gas chamber's use and to remove it immediately!

Gas chambers should never be used in animal control facilities! Carbon monoxide (CO) is a colorless, odorless gas that is extremely toxic, even in small amounts.

Green River Animal Control still uses a 40-year-old gas chamber, purchased in March 1985, which may require frequent calibration and maintenance checks to prevent leaks or accidents. Even a minor leak can be dangerous to volunteers, visitors, workers, and animals.

Shelters across the nation have removed or banned the gas chamber method, but Green River and Evanston animal control are the last two shelters in the country that still use it.

Help us end gas chamber cruelty!

Call now—be respectful but firm:

📞 Green River Animal Control Supervisor, Tracy Wyant: 307-872-0570
📞 Mayor Pete Rust: 307-871-3175

If gas chambers were humane, why have city shelters nationwide removed or banned this method? Only Green River and Evanston Animal Control still have active gas chambers in the country.

Why don’t we see gas chambers in veterinarians’ offices for euthanizing pets? Because they are not considered humane.

In a 2022 interview with the local newspaper Rocket Miner, Animal Control Supervisor Tracy Wyant defended the use of the gas chamber, saying it protects the mental health of her and her staff. She stated, “If I have a choice to put an animal in there [gas chamber], push that button and walk away, I would.”

Rocket Miner reported that she also said, “I don’t want to see it [gas chamber] go. I want to preserve my mental health and so does my staff.”

This raises the question: If gas chamber euthanasia is humane, why does Wyant avoid witnessing it, choosing instead to push the gas chamber button and walk away to protect her mental health?

Help us end the gas chamber cruelty!

Green River Animal Control Supervisor Tracy Wyant defended the gas chamber. She said:
“With this method [gas chamber], I can recuperate and we can deal with the rest of the day.” (as quoted in a local newspaper, Rocket Miner, 2022)

But the truth is heartbreaking. These animals have already suffered lives of neglect and abuse — their last moments should not be in a dark, sealed gas box. There is nothing humane about this method.

📞 Call now (be respectful but firm):

Tracy Wyant — 307-872-0570

Mayor Pete Rust — 307-871-3175

Ask them to remove the gas chamber immediately. No animal deserves this cruel death.
If euthanasia is absolutely necessary, it should be done with kindness and dignity through lethal injection, the humane method used in over 4,000 shelters nationwide, including nearby Rock Springs Animal Control.

In 2024, Green River Animal Control killed a total of 19 dogs. 17 of them were killed in the gas chamber. Even one is too many.

The following photos show just some of the dogs killed in the gas chamber by Supervisor Tracy Wyant and her staff in 2024. All photos and details are obtained from the City of Green River through an open public records request.

Green River Animal Control has shockingly ignored a $5,000 grant from the Humane Society of the United States, which was specifically intended to replace their cruel gas chamber with the humane alternative of lethal injection.

Even more disturbing, Green River Animal Control Supervisor Tracy Wyant told the local newspaper Rocket Miner in a 2022 interview:
"An injection requires at least two people. I can put them [animals] in the chamber by myself, push that button and walk away." The Rocket Miner reported that Wyant said this in relation to her own mental health.

Such cruelty to animals must end!

Call today!

Tracy Wyant, Animal Control Supervisor: 307-872-0570
Mayor Pete Rust: 307-871-3175

Tell them to remove the gas chamber immediately and switch entirely to humane injection where euthanasia is necessary.

“Euthanasia is necessary for feral cats. Those cats are very hard to handle,” said Green River Animal Control Supervisor Tracy Wyant to the local newspaper, Rocket Miner, in an interview (Oct. 2022) regarding feral cats that cannot be placed.

Many communities, including Rock Springs, practice Trap-Neuter-Release (TNR) — humanely trapping feral cats, spaying or neutering them so they cannot reproduce, and allowing them to live out their lives. TNR is a humane method to reduce feral cat populations over time.

No feral cat deserves to die a terrifying death in the gas chamber.

📞 Call Tracy Wyant and Mayor Pete Rust today:

Tracy Wyant, Animal Control Supervisor: 307-872-0570

Mayor Pete Rust: 307-871-3175

Ask them to:

1) Stop putting feral cats in the gas chamber.

2) Support Trap-Neuter-Release (TNR) — a humane method that can reduce feral cat populations.

3) Remove the gas chamber immediately and replace it with humane injection.

According to open public records, the gas chamber at Green River Animal Control was purchased in 1985 — a 40-year-old death machine. “Depending on the size of the animals, up to seven (7) may be loaded at one time,” according to their own policy. Green River Animal Control may claim they don’t put 7 animals together at once, but their own policy clearly allows it.

Regardless of the number, forcing any dog or cat into a closed, dark gas chamber is torture. This cruel practice must end immediately.

📞 Take action today — demand the gas chamber be removed:
Tracy Wyant, Animal Control Supervisor: 307-872-0570
Mayor Pete Rust: 307-871-3175

When you call, be polite and stay focused—don’t be distracted by adoption stories. Tell them to stop gassing animals and replace the gas chamber with humane injection methods.

Following are some photos of the gas chamber victims, with more photos on the way. All photos and their details were obtained from the City of Green River through an open public records request.
