Nocturnal Gallery Welcome to the Nocturnal Gallery! I started this page to showcase the nocturnal (and occasionally diurnal) creature companions that I care for and raise.

It is my hope that I'll be able to provide educational outreach for many species of oft misunderstood, feared, and hated creatures. If I can shift the perception of even one person, then I feel I have done a good deed.

Sparky is my orange phase Variable King! In a past life, Sparky was probably an Orange Cat, because The Brain Cell tends to skip her. All she thinks about is food, so I have Tap Trained Sparky to convince her I'm going to pick her up, rather than feed her. Even if she forgets after I pick her up and tries to make me a snack, it hardly hurts, and she relent how repulsive human blood tastes. A bite from a small Colubrid hurts less than a clothespin! ^_^

Mariposa turns 12 this year! She is the third Variable Kingsnake I've ever kept! She was a yearling when I brought her home and she's been my second favourite only to Jetta, because of her sweet temperament. She'll eat anything, from mice to quail, geckos to fish, and even pieces of frog legs! I love her beautiful butterfly patterns, which is the basis of her namesake; I've never found another Leonis with the same pattern!

Once Upon a Time, there was an oil field in Long Beach, California. Therein existed a hypermelanistic morph of California Kingsnakes, as observed and recorded by avid herpers, including my father, who worked for one of the companies that refined the oil, and his bestie. When it was announced in 2017 that the oil fields would be shut down and the entire area would be clear cut, bulldozed, and paved over for Willow Springs Park, that ended the Grease King's reign. Fortunately, field collected specimens were attained before the fields' destruction, and Grease Kings continue to exist in passionate, Locale-oriented Cal King keepers' collections. 🩷
