Dog scratch pads offer an alternative to clippers for trimming a dog's nails, but are they effective? Whole Dog Journal puts them to the test.

Giving your dog an exit strategy like “Let’s go” helps them to learn a new way to handle their triggers instead of just react to them.
You can see here little Wooloo wants to react but is happy to build space when we ask him. Most dogs want to build space when they’re reacting they just don’t know how. Their reactions are desperate cry for space, so teaching them to let’s go or leave it into open space can be very useful and often dogs pick up on it quickly!

Rooney really showing off in this video! Nikki Fuller
Notice these things that are important for improving recall -
💫I mark when she looks at me and even THINKS about checking in, which get her to come all the way back. Winning 🥇
✨my rate of reward is high! I’m completing with the woods, and dog with a fast brain I want to be quick with food in the beginning stages. Slow it down later.
🌟reward her when she makes choices I like not just when I call her.

1) decompression walks without triggers
2) Practice being calm outside without triggers first then at a distance
3) watch the world at safe distance calm with lots focus breaks for rewards! That’s what we are doing in this video 🤩

How to prevent a dog from backing out of the harness.
In the moment-
1) move towards then and put slack in the line
2) lure with food or get behind them and encourage them to move that way.
3) work on a leave it or let’s go to help them move along in the future

This skill is quintessential impulse control and so important to prevent door dashing! This is for safety! You can use a crate or door and transfer this skill to your car and really anywhere.

Don’t wait 🙃 Start working on this today!

There’s a better video on my YouTube- did you even know I have a YouTube? Go find it now and subscribe! I’m also on YouTube too!

To me this is one of the most important uses of impulse control - wait, and specifically applied to getting out of car.🚗

Your dog is excited (or scared) you just drove somewhere fun they can’t wait to LEAP out of the car, but you need all the stuff and to have that leash untangled and in your hands properly. Then You need to make sure it’s safe from other cars, maybe that there’s no dogs or kids close. This is why we practice wait! This is the moment a good wait was made for.

So practice in an easier setting, like your drive way and without going anywhere.
🚗start by opening the door slightly (not enough for them get out, dropping treats on the seat and saying wait
🚗advance slowly by opening the door slightly more each time. Be careful to release them before they jump on their own.

Do reps, you knew I was gonna say that. End on the 3-4 rep but make it succeed! 🎉

Pro tip - work on this first with a crate or inside door and then transfer to a car. 😉

Like and follow for the how to video coming soon.

Building impulse control starts young but can be done throughout adolescence and early adulthood. We start east and then start to use the skills in more and more scenarios.
Practicing regularly to build lifelong strong skills, patient, thoughtful dogs that are much easier to control and make decisions that we prefer.

Examples of impulse control;
🐶wait (at doors or out of crates or cars 🚗 )
🐶not countersurfing
🐶leave it
🐶recall from a distraction
🐶not stanching things from hands

There’s so many more….

Impulse control is another unrated skill. It’s boring work but so important that your dog can learn patience and to think before doing. It’s an important part of solving many behavioral problems, including reactivity. It’s a great activity for inside work and starts small and simple with treats in your hand and wait for the dog to not try for them.

Comment “control” for more posts on this! I’m happy to make a series. 🤓
