This 2-3-year-old boy isnโt just unique, heโs 1 in over 20,000.
Miles didnโt arrive at our shelter like most dogs. He had to be humanely live-trapped after surviving on his own in the wild - feral, alone, and completely shut down. He never knew a life that involved humans. When he first came to us, he was a ghost of a dogโฆ silently curled into a ball, eating only during the dark hours when no one was watching. He wouldnโt walk on a leash. Wouldnโt go outside. Wouldnโt move. He never growled, barked, or showed a single sign of aggression, just fear and total emotional withdrawal. A lifeless shell.
We later discovered Miles is a rare hermaphrodite, meaning he has both male and female reproductive anatomy, something weโve never encountered before! This doesnโt affect his personality or overall health, but it makes him truly one of a kind.
We tried every kind of treat you could imagine, but he never showed interest in any of them. It wasn't until offering a McDonald's cheeseburger that we found something he liked. With time, he eventually started eating it from our hand, so gently. That was the first spark of trust.
Despite his traumatic beginnings, the turning point came when we introduced him to another dog. For the first timeโฆ he played. He acted like a normal dog! Since then, weโve watched him take brave steps forward. He now greets familiar staff members at the kennel gate and enjoys exploring the play yard with dog friends. Heโs curious, gentle, and soaking up this new world of kindness.. one small victory at a time.
But Miles still has a long way to go, and he needs the right environment to continue growing.
๐ก Miles Needs:
โ๏ธ A calm, patient home
โ๏ธ A secure 6-foot privacy fence
โ๏ธ At least one confident, friendly dog to guide him
โ๏ธ A patient, experienced adopter who understands the journey of rehabilitating a feral/undersocialized dog
A trainer who spent time with Miles, painted a custom portrait of him to go home with his adopter!
Please Know:
Rehabilitating a feral dog like Miles takes time, consistency, and trust-building. Youโll need to let him set the pace, allowing him to observe, learn, and slowly come out of his shell. The rewards are quiet but profound: seeing the first tail wag, hearing the first bark, or watching him sleep peacefully for the first time in a real home.
If you have the heart, the patience, and the setup to give Miles the second chance he never knew he deservedโฆ he just might show you a kind of love that words canโt describe.
