Let's talk microchips for a few minutes. What is a microchip? It's a tiny transponder, normally implanted between the shoulder blades of not only dogs, but many other animals as well.
What should humans do, when their dog is microchipped? The only thing owners need to do is register the microchip, with the microchip company. Why should a dogs microchip be registered? Any "lost" dog or dogs found on the streets, is scanned looking for a microchip. This is done by veterinarians, rescues, some police departments have scanners, and many individuals have scanners. When the microchip number appears on the scanner, this number is then entered in to a universal microchip database. This allows veterinarians, rescues, and many other people to find the proper owner, thus reuniting the "lost" dog to their family. Think about how sad you and your family would be if your dog went missing. Now imagine how that poor dog feels.
Many breeders, including myself, have microchips already implanted before you pick your puppy up to go home, at no charge (this is a perk I offer). I have previously allowed pet owners to register their puppy/digs microchip themselves. I am notified when puppies microchip is registered. However, this has not been happening consistently enough, so a new policy I am instilling is; I will register all puppy microchips to the new owners. Yes, there will be a nominal fee. I will still give and implanted microchips at no cost, but I do have to charge for the registration. Registration costs $22.95 if individual owners register, as the breeder, I can register puppies for $20.00. This is not only a win for you (your puppy has registered microchip in your name at a reduced price), but also a win for myself (I know puppies microchips are registered, ensuring if they are lost, they find their owners).
True story, from one of my very first litters of Cavalier King Charles Spaniels. I received a call, text, and an email (yes, the company has all this information, due to me purchasing the microchips) from AKC Reunite, this is the brand of microchip I use. The puppy is now 2 years old, and his microchip was never registered. This boy was found "running the road". Thankfully the finder took to vet to be scanned, but microchip was not registered. They were able to tie the microchip to myself as the breeder. I was able to go through my records and reunite this dog with his owner. Microchips are definitely worth it.!!!
