On today's episode of "things to have on hand" when purchasing and bringing home a puppy.
This morning, I had a puppy, who was visually not right and had lost some weight. Then puppy vomited. I quickly scooped puppy up and ran him to my vets office. My wonderful vet at Rochelle Veterinary Hospital, quickly ruled out parvo (this was the bottom of the list, as we just had clean puppy fecals), but an easy one to rule out. Bloodwork was taken and ran. Turns out puppy's blood sugar was "dangerously low". This is where Nutrical comes in. Vet techs quickly rushed in and rubbed a small amount on to each side of puppy's gums. This quickly perked puppy up, and he began giving me kisses. This was a relief to me, as he was not giving kisses this morning. About 10 minutes late, tech came back in with some urgent care soft food. Puppy ate all of it. Please all puppy and dog owners, keep some of this on hand. On a side note, I do have some of this in my house, but in my worry, I did not think about giving puppy a little bit. So, after Nutrical, some urgent care food, a dose of anti nausea meds, and a little sub q fluids, we are back home. This particular puppy will not be playing today with the other 5, as puppy needs to reserve his energy and get to eating good again. By the way, this particular puppy, was the biggest in the litter. As you can see, things can and do happen rather quickly.
