Sozo Equine, LLC taping challenge day 30 of 30.
Last day!!

Today I did something simple but very effective. I taped Razz with a spine relaxation and SI support combination application.

With Razz’s PSSM a back relaxation application is always helpful for her and stabilizing the SI is also super helpful. While she doesn’t have consistent SI issues, I did feel like SI support would but helpful currently so I followed that gut feeling.

Also babypowder is great for when it’s been raining for hours and even though you’ve had your horse penned up for a while, they still aren’t dry and you really want to do the taping on the correct day! Note the powder on her back in the 3rd photo.

I really enjoyed this challenge again this year. It always is really fun and gives me another chance to try new applications and ones I haven’t used in a while.
For a while I wasn’t sure if I was going to get a taping done during daylight hours but I eventually did some applications before going to the harvest field!

Thank you Ciara Crawford for running this challenge every year. My horses and I always enjoy the taping time!

Sozo Equine, LLC taping challenge day 29 of 30.

I taped Daisy with a Radial nerve decompression application. This nerve branches off of the Brachial Plexus which is a nerve bundle under the shoulder blades(people have one too!)

Daisy doesn’t have any indications that the Radial nerve is compressed but I wanted to play around with a nerve decompression application and learn more. I do think that the tape is a little high on her shoulder blades but then actually comes down, over the Radial nerve.
So placement is a little off but this application is very interesting to study and apply!

Sozo Equine, LLC taping challenge day 28 of 30.

I taped Jasmine with a scar application.

Jasmine had an injury to her upper leg area a while ago and we are still working on reducing the scar tissue and keeping the area loose/reducing adhesions.

This application applies a shearing force in all directions which aids in the process of breaking up scar tissue. I’ve found this to help over time but it does take consistency to see a huge difference.

Sozo Equine, LLC taping challenge day 27 of 30.

I taped River with a coronet band application.

This application is great for a lot of things.
Did you know that horses don’t have any muscles from their knees and hocks down?
This means the blood flow is greatly reduced in the lower legs because the muscles aren’t there to move as much circulation throughout the lower limb.

This application helps bring blood flow into the hoof capsule which can increase growth, decreases pain, helps heal some hoof issues faster, and more.

River doesn’t really have a specific reason for this application but a little faster hoof growth wouldn’t be a bad thing for her.

Sozo Equine, LLC taping challenge day 26 of 30.

I taped Krember with a 3 part application today.
First I did an overall shoulder relaxation application, then a Bicep activation application, and last a Hamstring activation application.

Krember has a tendency to pull himself around with his shoulders instead of using his body correctly and pushing more with his hind end. These applications are meant to remind him to carry himself more properly.

The shoulder application was done with no tension to relax the muscles. Both hind end applications were done with tension inbetween mild and moderate to active the muscles.

Immediate reactions- licking and chewing.

Sozo Equine, LLC taping challenge day 25 of 30.

I taped Razz with a TMJ star application. Star applications are for decompression.

This is great for horses with most TMJ issues or possible concerns.

Razz had no major need for this application but it never hurts.

Sozo Equine, LLC taping challenge day 24 of 30.

I taped Razz with a hamstring application. This particular application is a combination of a circulation and fascial braid.

Razz has almost always struggled with tight hamstrings. That issue has gotten a little worse with her mud fever and how she was walking. Luckily she is walking normally again but her hamstrings were still tight so I’m trying to help them relax faster.

She always seems to enjoy any hamstring application.

Sozo Equine, LLC taping challenge day 23 of 30.

I taped Gypsy with a spine support application.

This particular application has two long strips applied with no tension to relax her muscles overall and 8 shorter strips with moderate tension across her spine to support her spine.

This is really good for Gypsy since she has a longer back and struggles with tension in her back.

Sozo Equine, LLC taping challenge day 22 of 30.

Today I taped River with a back relaxation application. This application has a combination of straight strips with no tension and fascial alternating waves.

River’s back was tighter today than normal because I trimmed her front hooves this morning and having her stand on 3 legs can be difficult with her PSSM. Luckily Kayla Hooper was there to help me with corruptive care and gave River her alfalfa pellets when needed. That made everything easier for both River and I.

This application is to help her recover from having to stand on 3 legs and balancing which causes some tension in her back.

Immediate reactions- licking and chewing.

Sozo Equine, LLC taping challenge day 21 of 30.

Tonight I taped Razz with a Thoracic Sling support application and a Supraspinatus muscle relaxation application.

The Thoracic Sling application starts at the top of the shoulder, goes down to the girth area, curves onto the pectoral muscles, and goes back up the front of the shoulder. This helps with support and activation of the thoracic sling. I used very little tension on purpose so it would remind her to activate her sling without getting irritating to her in any way.

The Supraspinatus application was to add circulation to the muscle and reduce tension. I’ve noticed recently that she was over using that muscle slightly so I’m trying to fix that. If needed I will start applying tape to other muscles to activate them more and take some load off of the Supraspinatus.

Razz was very happy with the entire taping process tonight. She was happily chilling and waiting on me to finish the entire application.

No major immediate reactions but this should help her in the long term in many ways.

Sozo Equine, LLC taping challenge day 20 of 30.

I taped Flicka with an SI support application. This particular one is 3 strips placed in a star pattern over the SI joint.

I used moderate stretch for the middle of each of the strips and zero stretch on the ends.

This application is one I will use directly after the horses get adjusted if the SI was an issue and looks like it might go out of place again easily.
It’s also great for overall hind end support.

No major immediate reactions from Flicka.

Sozo Equine, LLC taping challenge day 19 of 30.

I taped Jasmine with a Trapezius application. This one outlines the majority of the trapezius muscle.

I did this application mostly because I hadn’t tried this particular one before and wanted to try it but Jasmine started yawning and licking/chewing directly after applying it so it definitely was working!
This would make sense with how much I’ve been trying to get her to use her thoracic sling instead of running around with a hollow spine.

The trapezius is a muscle that has two “branches”. The most common branch that you would think of is the thoracic branch but most people don’t realize that it has a cervical branch too.
The trapezius actually goes all the way from C2(2nd Cervical Vertebrae) to T10(10th Thoracic Vertebrae).

Overall it looks like I will be doing similar applications on Jasmine again.

Sozo Equine, LLC taping challenge day 18 of 30.

This evening I taped Jasmine with a lower limb support application.

This application is great to use during a lot of different things. It can be used instead of or with sport boots when running barrels or cutting cattle(etc), it is great for supporting the lower limbs while hauling in a trailer, it supports any acute or chronic issues within the lower limbs and a lot more.

Lower limb applications are very versatile!

Jasmine didn’t have a huge need for this application but it’s always a good thing to do occasionally. She does have a little weakness in her hind fetlocks so this application will help support that.

No major immediate reactions.

Sozo Equine, LLC taping challenge day 17 of 30.

Yesterday I taped Gypsy with a bicep application.

I usually do this application with 3” tape. I think this is the first time I’ve tried it with 4” tape. Gypsy has some weird muscling in her hind end so hind end applications are always good for her. This kind of application can also help horses that are struggling to move their hind leg properly.

No immediate reactions.

Sozo Equine, LLC taping challenge day 16 of 30.
Taping by moonlight with River.
I had to get some better pictures in the daylight the next day.

This is a stifle sling/support application.

River doesn’t have a specific need for this application but River has changed a lot physically in this last year and I always like supporting her in anyway I can.

I’m a couple days behind on posting but all of these applications were done on the correct day.

No major immediate reactions.

Sozo Equine, LLC taping challenge day 15 of 30.
Half way!!
This evening I taped Razz with a jaw application. This application is targeting the TMJ and Masseter muscle(along with other muscles in the jaw and cheek).

Horse’s are grazers which means if they are eating properly, they are chewing way more than they aren’t. This means that the jaw is used a lot and can have a tendency to get tight. There are many reasons for the jaw to get tight other than chewing but they all can have a major effect.

This application will help relax her jaw and cheek area where I have noticed a very small amount of tension recently.

She seemed to enjoy the taping and absolutely loved having some time in the heated Tackroom before getting her blanket put on.

Sozo Equine, LLC taping challenge day 14 of 30.

Last night I taped Razz with a fascial braids on her lumbar spine area.
This is a stronger application and a little more “chaotic” looking than some other fascial braids but it’s still fun to do.

Razz is still walking slightly weird since her mud fever is still a little sore although getting better. This is causing her back to be tighter than usual so I used this application to continue to help her back get/stay looser.

She overall seemed to like this application.
