My annual PSA, in defense of small birds who need big help from humans 💚🪽.
Most of you know me as a wellness veterinarian, but I’m also a licensed wildlife rehabilitator—and this little patient died because someone fed him polluted, bacteria-laden nectar. It was entirely preventable.

If you’re going to feed wildlife, especially hummingbirds this time of year, please do it responsibly—or not at all. Feeding done wrong can kill.

🚫 Never use store-bought red-dyed nectar. Commercial red colored nectars are loaded with preservatives, additives, and Red Dye #5—all harmful to these fragile birds.

✅ Make your own safe nectar:
1 part plain white sugar + 4 parts boiling water (Example: ¼ cup sugar + 1 cup water). Stir until dissolved. Cool and store in the fridge for up to a week.
• No raw honey (wrong sugar structure)
• No organic or unrefined “raw” sugar (too much iron that can bioaccumulate over time)

🧫 Cleanliness is life or death
Warm sugar water becomes a breeding ground for deadly bacteria and fungi—fast.

• In spring: Clean and refill feeders twice a week

• Over 85°F? Clean and refill DAILY

Is it a hassle? Yes. But it’s also lifesaving.

I spend 15 minutes a day cleaning feeders to protect the birds in my yard. If that’s too much, that’s okay—just enjoy them without feeding. Plant bird-friendly flowers instead 🌺.

Be a good steward. Do no harm. Let’s keep our wild friends safe 🍃🕊️.

“Be the leader your dog needs and deserves...”

Welcome to Big Dog Canine Behavioral Training. My name is Adam Miller and I am an owner and trainer who would like to help you learn how to live a harmonious life with your dog.

The mission at Big Dog Canine Behavioral Training is to teach owners the proper techniques for communicating with their dog, training obedience commands and correcting unwanted behaviors There are no bad dogs, just owners that need some direction and guidance in their training techniques.

Our dogs are a big part of our lives and, in many instances, are considered family members. We spend most of our waking hours and, sometimes, most of our sleeping hours with them so it is imperative that they be well behaved and attentive.

Being so intertwined in our lives, it is crucial that we understand how to correctly set rules and boundaries when it comes to correct and acceptable behavior. Just because we love them does not guarantee that they will be well mannered.
