The Class of 2026 had one last idea before graduation: dress their pets in tiny doctoral tams and take commencement portraits together — because for veterinary students, the animals who sat through every late night and recorded lecture deserved to walk across the finish line too. 🥹 🧡

Thank you Kimberly McBroom WDBJ7 for having me on to talk about summer concerts for pets

1) heat 🥵: be careful with the coated dogs and make sure there is shade and water. Leave your dogs home and out of the heat for errands as cars can heat up QUICK! Minimize exercise in the middle of the day

Every summer we have deaths from heat strokes and it is easy to prevent !

2) Parvovirus. Another easy thing to prevent with vaccines! It is a very hardy virus that is everywhere. Minimize taking your puppies out until they are fully vaccinated. Fully vaccinated means a vaccine every 3-4 weeks until 20 weeks

3) fleas and ticks. Both can be extremely problematic not only to your pet but to you. Preventions again are key! Tick borne disease is on the rise in all species. Protecting your pets helps to protect you.

Talk to your primary vet about preventative medicine!

Well, hello ladies! Our thanks to Dr. Maureen Horner Noftsinger from Emergency Veterinary and Specialty Services of Roanoke for bringing sweet Pearl to see us today and sharing important tips to keep our furry friends healthy and safe from summer health risks like fleas, ticks, viruses and heat.

Thank you for coming to teach our amazing team!

RPD’s Animal Protection and Services Unit recently hosted animal control officers from across the Roanoke Valley for training on animal cruelty investigations. Attorney General’s Office Animal Law Unit Director Michelle Welch and veterinarian Dr. Moffitt shared valuable expertise on investigative techniques and the critical role veterinary partnerships play in these cases.

Training and collaboration like this help us better protect the animals and communities we serve 🐶🐈🤝

A tribute to a one of a kind girl:
Blanche wore many hats during her lifetime: professional blood donor, unofficial staff greeter, chicken enthusiast, groundhog hunter, supervisor of all her mom’s activities, and Sarah's full-time best friend.

She took her job of saving lives seriously, helping countless pets through her donations over the years. Thanks to Blanche, many families got more time with the animals they loved.

When she wasn't busy being a hero, Blanche could usually be found on her parents farm, looking for treats, accepting well-deserved attention, or keeping a close eye on Sarah to make sure she wasn't getting into too much trouble.. which was of course a full time job in its own.

You could always count on her big bright blue eyes staring at you from across our treatment room, judging you of course. Always making sure patient care was top tier.. in between naps.

While we're heartbroken to say goodbye, Blanche lived a life full of love!

Thank you for everything, Blanche. Thank you for the lives you saved, the laughs you gave us, and for being the very best girl. The clinic won't be the same without you, but we like to think you're somewhere finding the biggest sunbeam, the comfiest bed, and convincing everyone that you definitely deserve one more treat.

We will all miss you, Blanche (aka Branch, Sranch, Scranch, Ranch dressing, White devil)
