Lately, I've been reflecting on the deep divide in the horse world. It's pretty much why all I've been really posting is stuff for my business and my herbs and not much of anything else.
Some of the videos lately that I see on social media are absolutely mind-shattering. And honestly, it makes me wonder- how do people even have the nerve to share them? And then how do they get angry when hundreds of people speak up.... Not for drama, but for the horse.
There's a clear divide:
Those who think it's okay to start horses under saddle too young, and those who don't. Those who understand how horses, physically and mentally grow, and those who are willfully blind to it. Those who can watch a riding discipline and know – really know - when a horse is suffering.. And those who still call it "training."
So much of what I see now, horses behind the vertical, faces cranked tight with nosebands, bizarre and painful bit contraptions, crippled canters passed off as collection, young horses like bucking broncos because no one put in the proper groundwork. So many people refusing to recognize that their horse is suffering in some way and communicating- physically, emotionally, spiritually. Refusing to see how much of what we ask is based on ego. Refusing to wait for a horse to be ready... And then teach with compassion and clarity.
And those of us who do speak out, horse people and non-horse people alike, often laughed at or dismissed. But the mighty dollar and the cheap ribbon are a dangerous combination when it comes to horse welfare. It certainly doesn't help that the riding associations and federations let certain things go and don't even follow their own rules.
Some people think they care. I've seen the difference. I see your foals, born with restrictions and ignored growing into bodies filled with tension and imbalance. I see your horses needing real, meaningful Bodywork and healing modalities, but it goes untouched because it's "different". I see your horses suffering from things herbs could absolutely help with, but no one's listening, while the horse continues to struggle with issues that are covered up instead of healed. I see horses band - aided up so badly that no one even remembers what Wellness looks like anymore. Sad eyes, broken feet, restricted bodies, learned helplessness. Tortured souls.
Yet, they still do what we ask.... But not because they want to. Because most have been forced- some violently, until their resistance is gone. And this isn't about using guiding tools like whips and Spurs as an assisting aid. Even though realistically, we could teach our horses everything without them. What I'm talking about goes way beyond that and it is so soul-crushing to me and heartbreaking to witness, that even going on social media is like preparation for what I'm going to see in a way that I've never experienced before to protect my emotional state.
It's heartbreaking to witness. People at all levels, trainers, owners, backyard riders, show competitors, breaking the spirits and bodies of these animals while loudly proclaiming how much they love them.
And just because I don't ride anymore, or don't show up with the fancy title or the right letters behind my name, doesn't mean I don't know what I'm talking about. I've spent years in this work, outside of the box, education and schooling, learning, observing and listening. Living alongside horses, guided by both intuition and science. Different doesn't mean less. In many cases, it actually means more. This doesn't mean that I know everything, because education and observation are constant.
So to the ones in the back, the noise makers the troublemakers, The advocates.... The ones speaking out for the horses no matter your level of riding. The ones. Learning better and doing better, finding science-backed truths and blending them with intuition and heart.. I see you. I applaud you. And I beg you, don't ever stop being the voice for the horse.
