BLOAT
Know the signs

Bloat (GDV) is a life-threatening emergency that if not treated immediately is fatal.

Deep chested breeds like Standard Poodles are at higher risk but this can happen in any breed of dog.

⚠️ Signs to watch for:

▪️Sudden swollen or hard belly

▪️Trying to vomit but nothing comes out

▪️Restlessness, pacing, or inability to settle

▪️Excessive drooling

▪️Collapse or weakness

Ask your vet about gastropexy surgery.

If you suspect bloat, go to the vet right away. Minutes matter.

"Dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) is the second most common heart disease in dogs. In recent years, concerns have been raised regarding a potential association between grain-free dog foods and the development of DCM.

To evaluate this possible connection, this study randomized healthy adult dogs to one of four complete and balanced diets, each formulated with different ingredients, to assess their impact on cardiac function and overall health over an 18-month period.

The diets included:

A grain-free diet with potatoes and peas
A grain-inclusive diet with peas and pea fiber
A grain-inclusive diet without peas or potatoes
A grain-free diet with potatoes

No changes in cardiac function were observed between the grain-free and grain-inclusive groups, and taurine levels remained unaffected by diet.

These results show that foods designed to provide similar nutritional profiles—regardless of specific ingredients—supported heart health in healthy adult dogs. This study highlights the importance of balanced, high-quality nutrition in maintaining canine heart health."

Yesterday Frank(Ferrari/Ondy) arrived in Oregon to his new owner Lesley. I’m happy he’s getting along well with her and seems to be doinging well. Here’s to new beginnings and a new job for Frank.

Did some pre-purchase x-rays for Frank’s person. Overall he’s solid, a bit of laxity on the left, and it’s seated not as deeply as the right, but he’s functional and moves well, especially considering how massive he is. He’s also not perfectly straight and they struggled with positioning him, it’s good enough to see what we need to see. Here’s to wishing a long and healthy working career for him.

On Thursday we welcomed Frank(Ondy/Ferrari) back. We’re going to take sometime to evaluate his temperament and see where his training is at before making him available for placement.
