Tips for Keeping Your Horse Static-Free ⚡️
We’ve all been there—dry winter weather, a quick touch of your horse, and zap! An accidental static shock leaves you feeling awful, and suddenly your horse starts to flinch or brace when you approach. Not exactly the trust-building moment we’re aiming for.
So, what can we do to prevent it?
• Wash blankets, saddle pads, and other horse apparel with fabric softener. Dryer sheets help too—extra-strength or heavy-duty pet versions work especially well.
• Use a light conditioning spray when removing blankets. Instead of pulling the blanket off in one motion, fold it back slowly to reduce friction. Lightly mist the coat with conditioner as you go.
• Keep your horse well-moisturized. Conditioning sprays—like our Root Renaissance—can make a big difference. Be mindful with detanglers: while many create silky, tangle-free hair, some can actually be quite drying.
• Don’t forget about yourself. Dry clothes can carry a lot of static. Dry skin can also contribute, so stay moisturized and hydrated. We have a couple of rider products that can help including Ridden Ragged Replenishing Cream, Barn Hands Be Gone Salve and Pucker Up Pony lip Balm. Use dryer sheets on your own laundry, and ground yourself on metal before touching your horse if shocks have been an issue.
• Be mindful with bathing. While sometimes necessary, baths strip natural oils from the coat and can increase dryness. Follow up any bathing with a hot towel oil treatment to replenish moisture—our Nourishing Tail Treatment is a great option.
• Watch for friction-causing activities. Gloves paired with a lead rope during groundwork, or hand-walking a blanketed horse, can all generate static and result in an unpleasant ⚡️.
A little awareness and moisture go a long way toward keeping both you and your horse comfortable—and shock-free
