PLEASE READ!
(When I tell you guys I love the boys it’s not a sales pitch) 🤗

Did you know there is a definite difference between a male and female? Well there truly is!

Does a male or a female make a better pet for you and your family?
It’s not uncommon for people to believe that a female dog will make a better pet. We get a lot of calls for people wanting that “special little girl”. For whatever reason they don’t think that females will exhibit “alpha” behaviors like hu***ng and/or marking. A lot of people think that females are more passive and friendly and that they don’t take part in fighting over dominance, which could NOT be farther from the truth. If you check out the structure of dog packs, the females determine the pecking order and rule the roost. The result of that behavior is that the females become more stubborn, independent, and territorial than the males. These females are much more intent on exercising their control by participating in that “alpha” behavior like hu***ng. Most fighting will usually break out between two females.
Males tend to be more affectionate, exuberant, attentive, and even more demanding of attention. The males are very attached to their owners, tending to be more dedicated, reliable and less temperamental. They are more sociable, more accepting of other pets, playful for years, and take quicker to children. Most boys are easily motivated by treats/food, words of praise and are so eager to please that training actually becomes easier. Their playful nature, however, can make males more easily distracted. The boys are more likely to act silly and more puppy-like, always wanting to play games, no matter what their age. The boys are fun-loving until the day they die, whereas girls tend to be more standoffish and dignified the older they get.
Neutered males rarely exhibit secondary sexual behavior such as marking and lifting their legs or hu***ng. Once the testosterone levels recede after neutering, most of these behaviors will disappear if they ever existed. Boys who were neutered early (by 6-9 months of age) usually don’t ever raise their leg to urinate.
So before making your decision on that age old dilemma of male verses female.

BOYS ARE THE BEST!!

POEM OF A DOG
I am the one who always waits for you.
Your car has a special sound that I
have imprinted on my senses, I can
recognize it among a thousand.
Your steps have a magic timbre.
Your voice is music to my ears.
If I see your joy, it makes me happy!
Your scent is the best,
Your presence is what moves my
senses.
Your awakening wakes me up.
I watch you sleep and for me you are
my God, I am happy watching over
your sleep.
Your gaze is a ray of light. Your hands
on me have the lightness of peace and
the sublime display of infinite love.
When you go out, I feel a huge
emptiness in my heart.
I wait for you again and again.
I am the one who will wait for you all
my life today, tomorrow and always:
I am your dog ❤️

🐾 Big News for Breeders: A New Hope Against Parvo

We all know the fear! Parvovirus is one of the scariest words a breeder can hear. For years, our only option was "supportive care"—keeping the puppy hydrated and hoping their immune system could win the fight.

But the game has officially changed! Elanco Animal Health has just received Full USDA Approval for their Parvovirus treatment, now called Trutect™. It’s no longer just "experimental" or "conditional"—it is fully vetted, proven, and ready to save lives.

🧬 How is this different?
Think of traditional treatment (IV fluids, anti-nausea meds) as keeping the puppy strong while they fight the virus. Trutect is different. It is a monoclonal antibody that acts like a heat-seeking missile. It enters the body, finds the Parvovirus, and neutralizes it directly. It fights the virus for the puppy.

❤️ Why We’re Celebrating

This approval brings huge peace of mind to our community for three big reasons:

• It Saves Puppies: In studies, the survival rate for treated puppies was 93% or higher. That is a massive leap forward compared to traditional outcomes.
• You Can Protect the Littermates: If one puppy gets sick, you can treat the healthy, exposed littermates (as long as they are 8 weeks or older) to help stop them from getting sick in the first place.
• Faster Recovery: Treated puppies generally feel better sooner and go home earlier, which means less stress for the pup and lower vet bills for you.

Friendly Reminder: This treatment is amazing, but it does not replace vaccines! Vaccines teach the body to fight future threats; Trutect fights the immediate threat. Keep those vaccination protocols strong!

📢 What You Should Do Now
Next time you visit your vet, ask them: "Do you carry Trutect yet?"
Even if you (hopefully) never need it, knowing your vet has it on the shelf provides incredible peace of mind.

📌 The Breeder's Cheat Sheet
• The Name to Know: Trutect™ (you might still hear your vet call it Elanco CPMA).
• The Magic Number: Safe for puppies 8 weeks of age and older.
• How it Works: It’s a one-time IV dose. No daily injections needed for this specific treatment.
• Double Duty: It’s fully approved to treat puppies who are already sick AND protect healthy littermates who have been exposed.

The Lepto Vaccine
For owners of toy breeds—such as Chihuahuas, Pomeranians, Yorkies, and Maltese—the decision to administer the Leptospirosis (Lepto) vaccine is often met with significant caution. Many breeders and small-dog advocates argue that for these tiny companions, the potential for severe adverse reactions far outweighs the likelihood of infection.
The following article outlines the specific risks and lifestyle factors that make the Lepto vaccine a point of concern for toy breed owners.
The Danger of Adverse Reactions
The primary argument against the Lepto vaccine in toy breeds is its high rate of Vaccine-Associated Adverse Events (VAAEs). Small dogs are physiologically more vulnerable to vaccine reactions than large breeds, and the Lepto shot is frequently cited as one of the most "reactive" injections in veterinary medicine.
* Hypersensitivity and Anaphylaxis: Toy breeds are at a statistically higher risk for Type I hypersensitivity. This can manifest as facial swelling, hives, and acute vomiting, or escalate to life-threatening anaphylactic shock shortly after the injection.
* The Dosage Disparity: Currently, vaccines are not weight-adjusted. A 4-lb Yorkie receives the exact same volume of antigen and chemical adjuvants as a 120-lb Mastiff. This creates a massive over-stimulation of the toy dog's immune system, which many believe leads to systemic inflammation.
* Localized Vasculitis: In small breeds, the Lepto vaccine has been linked to localized vasculitis (inflammation of the blood vessels) at the injection site. In tiny dogs, this can result in permanent focal alopecia (hair loss) or skin necrosis.
Why it is Often Unnecessary
For many toy dogs, the actual risk of contracting Leptospirosis is virtually zero, making the dangerous side effects of the vaccine an unnecessary gamble.
* Low-Risk Lifestyles: Leptospirosis is typically spread through the urine of wildlife in standing water, marshlands, or soil. Most toy breeds live strictly indoor lives, walk on city pavement, and are rarely—if ever—exposed to the rural or suburban environments where the bacteria thrive.
* Limited Strain Coverage: There are over 250 known "strains" (serovars) of Leptospirosis. Most vaccines only cover four. If a dog is exposed to a strain not included in the shot, they remain unprotected despite having taken the risk of the injection.
* Short-Term Efficacy: Unlike core vaccines (like Rabies or Parvo) which can provide years of protection, the Lepto vaccine requires annual or even bi-annual boosters. This subjects a small dog to the cumulative risk of a reaction every 12 months for a disease they are unlikely to encounter.
Hidden Risks: The Cumulative Effect
Toy breeds often face "vaccine fatigue" because their small bodies struggle to process multiple antigens simultaneously.
* Combination Shot Dangers: The Lepto vaccine is frequently bundled into a "7-way" or "5-way" combo shot (DHLPP). Research suggests that the more antigens given at once, the higher the risk of a reaction. For a tiny dog, the addition of the Lepto component to a standard booster can be the tipping point for the immune system.
* Autoimmune Concerns: There is ongoing concern among some holistic veterinarians and breeders that the aggressive adjuvants used in the Lepto vaccine may trigger long-term immune-mediated diseases in genetically predisposed small breeds.

Protecting Your Toy Breed
If you choose to decline the Lepto vaccine based on these risks, you can minimize environmental exposure by:
* Avoiding stagnant water or puddles during city walks.
* Ensuring your yard is free of rodent attractants.
* Focusing only on "core" vaccines (Rabies, Distemper, Parvo) that offer long-term protection with fewer boosters.

My purchase of a well bred purebred dog does not condemn another dog to death.

My purchase of a well bred purebred dog does not result in an uptick in the shelter dogs.

My desire to have a dog with predictable temperament from a healthy line does not result in another dog not getting adopted at the shelter.

My careful research on the most responsible breeders who meet all requirements is not the problem. It's not what you should be mad at.

It's not who you should blame.

I am not the one who irresponsibly brought these dogs into this world and left them in a shelter. Responsible breeders aren't the ones bringing these dogs to animal shelters either.
It's my home, my life and my choice what kind of dog I want to bring in. Maybe I need a working dog, sport dog, show dog or just a companion dog of a certain breed that suits me best.

Whatever reason I choose to support a reputable breeder, it will not send an animal protection dog to death.

A breeder who does health tests, temperament tests and titling of their dogs does not contribute to the number of stray dogs.

The number of stray dogs in the world is a problem, but it's not a problem made worse by reputable breeders or those who buy from them.

Your neighbor who gets a "purebred" dog without papers because they're cheap is contributing to the problem.

Your friend who spontaneously bought a puppy from Petland is contributing to the problem.

The person scrambling to pump out the hottest designer mix ASAP is contributing to the problem.

Your relatives who have to get their dog bred once, "so she can experience what it's like to be a mother" or because "she's such a good/cute/sweet girl" are contributing to the problem.

Your old school mate who bought a working dog with lots of energy without taking the time to research its needs and character who ultimately sees it doesn't fit his lifestyle is the problem.

A reputable breeder offers lifetime support. A serious breeder would never allow their dogs to end up in a shelter from the start.

It's understandable to be angry about the number of homeless dogs in the world, but if you look closer, you'll find that your anger is misplaced.
