🐾 Groomer Tip Wednesday: Can You Brush Your Dog Too Much?
This week’s Groomer Tip Wednesday was inspired by a question from one of my wonderful clients after their Husky’s appointment. They told me they’d never heard of brush burn before—and honestly, they’re not alone! It’s one of those grooming topics that surprises a lot of pet parents.
The answer is yes—you absolutely can overbrush your dog.
Brushing is one of the best things you can do for your dog’s coat, but using too much pressure, brushing the same area repeatedly, or using the wrong brush can irritate the skin and cause what’s known as brush burn. This can leave your pup with red, sore, or sensitive skin and can even make them start to dislike being brushed.
Over time, excessive brushing can also:
🐾 Damage the healthy topcoat
🐾 Break or pull healthy hair
🐾 Thin the coat
🐾 Reduce the coat’s natural insulation against heat and cold
This is especially important for double-coated breeds like Huskies, Golden Retrievers, German Shepherds, Australian Shepherds, and other heavy shedders. While these breeds may benefit from more frequent brushing during shedding season, more brushing isn’t always better. The goal is to remove loose undercoat while keeping the healthy guard hairs intact.
The good news? You don’t need to stop brushing! Regular brushing is one of the best things you can do for your dog’s skin and coat. The key is using the right tools, gentle technique, and brushing only as much as your dog’s coat needs.
💜 Every dog is different, and every coat has different grooming needs. If you’re ever unsure which brush to use, how often to brush, or have another grooming question, I’d love to help!
