Wellness Wednesday: Fueling the RVA Adventure

You’ve picked the fancy bag with the pretty pictures... but is your dog truly thriving on it? At Recess, we view your dog as a little athlete, and their body provides the ultimate feedback loop!

Here are 4 ways to audit your pup's nutrition:

1. The Scoop on P**p 💩
Aim for a "log"—firm, segmented, and easy to clean up. Quality food means better nutrient absorption and less waste. If it’s a constant "pancake" or liquid, the food may have too many fillers or a trigger ingredient. If it's rock-hard and crumbly, they likely need more hydration or fiber.

2. The "Mirror Test" (Coat & Skin) ✨
A dog’s skin and coat are the first places the body "steals" nutrients from if fuel is low-quality. A healthy coat should be soft and lustrous. A dull, brittle coat, "doggy dandruff," or constant itching usually points to a lack of Essential Fatty Acids (Omega-3s & 6s) or a food sensitivity.

3. The "Vitality Meter" (Energy Levels) ⚡
Does your pup have the stamina for a full "Recess" session? High-quality protein provides sustained energy. If your dog gets hyper right after eating but turns into a total slug an hour later, their food might be too high in simple starches/sugars and low on clean protein.

4. The Clarity Check (Eyes & Breath) 👁️
Bright, alert eyes and healthy pink gums are the hallmarks of a well-fueled pup. Eyes should be clear and free of chronic "goopy" discharge, which can stem from systemic inflammation caused by poor-quality ingredients. (And while breath won’t smell like roses, it shouldn't smell like dead fish, either!)

Note: We’re experts in fun and care, but we aren't vets! Always consult your veterinarian before making major changes to your pet's diet.

: Real Review of the Woof Walk About Toy 🐾🎒

If you caught our review of the Woof Pupsicle, you know we are big fans of the brand but had some safety notes for the heavy chewers out there. Today, we’re looking at its big brother: The Woof Walk About. We took this out for a spin, and it completely surprised us. Here is our honest, unfiltered breakdown!

🟢 The Pros: What We Loved
Encourages True Movement: We love that this toy actually gets your dog up and moving! While it’s certainly no replacement for a structured RVA Barks & Rec trail walk, it is absolute gold for keeping those paws busy.

Surprisingly Durable: Here’s the shocker—we found the Walk About to be way more durable than its smaller protege, the Pupsicle! Because of its sheer size and unique shape, even heavy chewers can't seem to get their full jaw engaged to do any real destruction.

🟡 The "Cons": Honestly, We're Still Looking for Them!
A Subtle Engagement Shift: If we have to nitpick, it scores just a little bit lower on intense, hyper-focused engagement when compared to the Pupsicle. It's a different kind of vibe.

The Ultimate Slow Feeder Alternative: Even with slightly lower drive, it has quickly become a team favorite. It serves as a fantastic, kibble-friendly alternative to traditional slow-feeder bowls for pups who like to inhale their dinner.

🛡️ The Barks & Rec Verdict
The Verdict: If you have a high-energy dog and need a durable, rainy-day sanity saver that doubles as a fun mealtime puzzle, the Walk About is a certified win for your indoor enrichment toolkit.

🌲🐾 Trail Tails Thursday: Larus Park

Next up for our Trail Tails Thursday spotlight is one of Southside Richmond's best-kept secrets: Larus Park! 🌲🐾

While many flock to the riverfront, our 'Recess' explorers from All Dog Adventures know that Larus offers a completely different, immersive forest experience. It’s a true deep-woods oasis tucked away in the city.

If your dog thrives on quiet focus, complex smells, and navigating natural terrain, Larus is their playground! Why the dogs love it:

Sensory Saturation: The dense, multi-layered forest provides a complex "smell-scape" that standard neighborhood walks can't compete with.

Confidence Building Terrain: The extensive network of winding, unpaved single-track trails features varying elevations, natural roots, and gentle streams, perfect for building physical coordination and mental confidence.

Woodland Serenity: The heavy canopy makes it cool even in peak summer, and the quiet atmosphere is ideal for dogs that find river noises overstimulating.

Wellness Wednesday: RVA Seasonal Safety-Tick Talks

Between the James River Park System, the Fan’s ivy-covered backyards, and the tall grasses of Pony Pasture, Richmond is basically a five-star resort for ticks. Luckily, you don't have to avoid the trails to keep your dog safe. You just need a routine. A 30-second check and a monthly pill are "small wins" that allow for big adventures.

The "30-Second" Scan
The Goal: A daily "paws-to-ears" check after every outdoor adventure. Focus on the "hiding spots": between toes, under armpits, inside ears, and around the tail base.

Removal Reality
The Goal: Use fine-tipped tweezers or a tick-removal tool. Grasp as close to the skin as possible and pull upward with steady, even pressure.

The Warning: Old-school "hacks" like using a hot match, petroleum jelly, or nail polish can actually increase the risk of infection.

The Prevention Layer
The Goal: A consistent, vet-approved preventative (oral or topical). This creates a "safety net" for the ticks you might miss during a manual check.

The Warning: Relying only on "natural" sprays for high-traffic RVA trail areas. While they can help, they often aren't enough to stop a hungry Richmond Deer Tick.

The "Watch & Wait"
The Goal: Note the date and location of any tick bite. Watch for a "bullseye" or localized swelling, but also keep an eye on general behavior.

The Warning: Looking for a rash that never comes. Many dogs don't show a "bullseye" like humans do. Instead, watch for "The Warning Signs": sudden lethargy, shifting lameness (limping), or a loss of appetite.

: Honey I’m Home Collagen Rolls Review 🍯🦴

Tested by: Qfwfq (Resident Heavy Chewer & Critic)

Chewing is a biological necessity for dogs—it releases endorphins, lowers cortisol, and is the perfect way to achieve a peaceful "Brain Drain" at home. We put the Honey I'm Home Collagen Rolls to the test against a powerhouse chewer.

Here is our honest breakdown! 👇

🟢 The Pros: What We Loved
Hours of Engagement: These aren't your typical 5-minute treats. They actually keep dogs engaged for hours—a massive sanity-saver!

The Ultimate Rawhide Alternative: Traditional rawhide is dangerous and indigestible. These are 100% digestible and made from high-quality water buffalo collagen.

Heavy-Chewer Approved: Q totally approves. If you have an aggressive chewer, these actually step up to the challenge.

🔴 The Cons: Things to Keep in Mind
The Sticky Situation: Heads up—these get messy. After an hour of chewing, Q’s paws and forearms were covered in a thick, sticky residue.

The Odor: That leftover residue doesn’t exactly smell like roses while they're working on it.

Protect Your Furniture: The stickiness washes off fur easily, but it can stain. Let your dog enjoy this on a wipeable floor or an old towel!

Supervision Required: Like most natural chews, once it gets chewed down to a small nub, it's a choking hazard. Skip the crate and keep an eye on them so you can take the nub away.

🛡️ The RVA Barks & Rec Verdict
If you want a safe, long-lasting way to give your dog some serious mental downtime, these are a major win. Just swap the crate for supervised, couch-free zones!

🏛️ Trail Tails Thursday: Pumphouse Park (The Gothic Escape)

The Vibe: Victorian Ruins & Quiet Woodland Enchantment.

Located just a stone's throw from the James River, Pumphouse Park is one of Richmond's most unique outdoor spaces. Anchored by the hauntingly beautiful 1883 Pump House building, this park offers a serene, slightly "secret garden" feel that’s perfect for pups who prefer a more tranquil adventure away from the crowds.

Why the dogs love it:
The "Sniff-story": The trails wind around the old canal locks and the historic pump house, offering a wealth of complex, interesting scents that keep a dog's mind as active as their paws.

Shaded Serenity: The heavy canopy provides deep shade even on the humid RVA days, making it a "cool" choice for a midday recess.

The Reflection Pool: The calm waters of the canal are perfect for a focused, peaceful walk where your dog can watch the turtles and ducks without the high-energy chaos of the river rapids.

Recess Note: When our "Recess" pups from visit Pumphouse, we focus on confident exploration. The historic stairs and varying elevations are great for "paws-on" enrichment, helping dogs build confidence on different surfaces while soaking up the quiet woods.
