So true!
✨Muzzles aren’t for bad dogs✨
**Muzzle police are on this post. Of course this muzzle is too small for physical activity and constant use 🙄. You need a greyhound or similar type for that. But for veterinary safety and specific brief training scenarios it is absolutely fine and nobody should feel like it is wrong to get a tool in a pinch if they absolutely need it for safety. There’s always room for improvement but if you need safety right now - get the tool you need and then move forward.**
Muzzles are an incredible tool for soooo many reasons.
1.) risk prevention. Imagine an injured painful dog needing an uncomfortable life saving procedure. A muzzle protects all from getting bitten. Some dogs just also are afraid of the vet due to bad situations, anxieties etc. everyone is more relaxed and confident handling your dog (including your dog) if they are properly muzzle trained.
2.)Risk management. Some dogs just don’t know how to not eat things they shouldn’t. This can lead to life or death surgeries that often end in tragedy. Having a properly fitted and trained basket muzzle can reduce that risk 100%.
3.) behavior modification. Using a muzzle is a great way to work with dogs that have a tendency to be reactive or lash out without risk of that dog being able to cause harm. This alleviates a layer of stress in the environment that makes training much more effective.
4.) like anything, you don’t know when someday you will need it. So just prepare your dog. It’s easy.
🌸What reasons do you utilize muzzles?🌸
Here at untamed we are currently muzzle training our intact boys because there have been some high tension moments between a few of them with our females when they enter their fertile stage of their heat cycles. We simply cannot sepparate everyone, it’s not feasible for the lifestyle we chose to live here. Having them accepting of the muzzle, and able to work around each other without us needing to worry about conflicts or stress as while we work with them around and nose to nose with the females is inperative to ensuring our pack dynamic stays healthy and safe for everyone. It’s all part of being a multi dog household. It also allows us to teach them proper impulse control which ultimately makes for a male being a star member of society. Having 3 young males is a lot of training 🙂 and a lot of fun.
One of the key takeaways in behavior modification is prevention of poor choices. Because after the first bite/fight - tension only gets worse and bites only get worse. The quicker you can stop the cycle the quicker you can have a calm environment for everyone going forward.
It’s also really important to me that the vets that work with my dogs feel safe around them. Although my dogs would never harm a human, some simply are afraid of blue eyes dark dogs. If they want to throw a muzzle on, I’m happy to. The dogs won’t mind because they are trained it’s no big deal.
