WHAT TO DO IF YOU FIND A BABY OPOSSUM?

With the tail end baby opossum season here, we wanted to post a reminder.
Mama opossums can have up to 20 babies riding on her back at once, and will not come back if one falls off. Any babies on their own need your help!

If under 7 inches from nose to rump, get the baby quickly in a little box or pet carrier with a blanket. Keep it WARM (the cold will kill babies before hunger does) and call a wildlife rehabber. Please note is against the law to trap, confine, keep or relocate any wild animal including babies.

DO not attempt to offer food or water. Wild animals CANNOT digest formula and will need to be warm before being offered food or water by a certified rehabber. Opossum babies cannot be bottle fed and attempts can result in choking or fluid in the lungs. They MUST be tube fed by a wildlife rehabber. Keeping them warm is priority number one.

If you find a baby longer than 7 inches, they are just getting started with their solo life. If they aren't in any danger, just leave them be!

Give a “dead” opossum the benefit of the doubt before disposing of the body. It may be “playing possum”, entering a comatose state and appearing dead as a defense mechanism. This may last minutes or hours, and they will not respond to touch in this state. Leave the area and give the opossum a chance to recover and move on.. When the opossum is about to recover, the ears move very slightly.

Opossums are not aggressive or destructive, and do not carry rabies due to their low body temperature. They are extremely beneficial to our ecosystems. They are just as much a part of our community as you or I.💙

BABY COPPERHEADS are out and about already!!!!! I found this one in the road already dead last night in Buchanan County, VA. I always thought it was about 4-6 more weeks before they were born...??

PLEASE be careful with the kids and your pets!!!
This one could have very easily been in a freshly mowed lawn and never been seen. It was about 12-18 inches long and very slim.

PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE treat your animals for fleas and ticks!!! I have a dog that wandered in at my house a couple of days ago. She was covered in ticks. I got OVER 50 ticks (yes, I counted them, lol.... I quit at 50!!) off of her head most of them were in her ears. I still have more to get off of her, she got tired so I quit for this morning.
You can take your pet to your vet and get a flea/tick preventative. Walmart and tractor supply has the seresto collars or for a more affordable alternative you can take your pet to Bristol Humane Society formerly Margaret Mitchell Spay and Neuter Clinic on Rt.11 going toward Bristol from Abingdon it is on the left hand side. I'm pretty sure your pet will have to see the vet the first visit. The vet is there on Thursdays and Fridays just call to be sure before you go before you go. To the best of my knowledge office visits are $15.00.
While you are there you may want to get your pet updated on their Rabies, Kennel Cough and Parvo mix, to the best of my knowledge they are $15.00 each. So, for $45.00 your pet can be protected against the contagious diseases! ** These shots are required by the state of VA before you can board your animals.

This week has been a reminder for all of us to check our safety plans before the storm hits. Here are some tips for keeping your pets safe and comfortable when the Oklahoma weather does its thing. Microchipping WORKS. If your pet is not chipped, call us to change that. And if they are microchipped, visit the link below to make sure your most current contact info is correct on their registration. We are happy to assist with any microchip questions. And if you believe your pet might benefit from medication to help with storm anxiety, let us know.
