Did you know??
Bluetick Coonhounds were originally registered by the United Kennel Club as English Coonhounds and weren’t recognized as their own breed until 1946. Their ancestry traces primarily to English Foxhounds, with the influence of cold-nosed French hounds, including bloodlines believed to have come from the Grand Bleu de Gascogne. That heritage helped produce a hound capable of methodically following older scent trails long after many other dogs would lose them. Rather than relying on speed alone, Blueticks are known for carefully working out a track with their nose, taking the time to unravel difficult scent instead of rushing to the end. That deliberate trailing style has earned the breed a reputation among generations of hunters for producing honest, dependable hounds that are known for their accuracy. A Bluetick isn’t bred to simply run fast, it’s bred to solve a scent puzzle one footstep at a time. When a good Bluetick locates and settles into a steady chop on the tree, experienced hunters know there’s usually a reason for it. That careful tracking style, paired with a loud, distinct voice that changes when game is treed, is what has made the breed a favorite among generations of hunters pursuing raccoons and big game across North America.
