TLDR: No, you don't have to throw them all out if you find one or a few moldy berries. If your berries get to that point before you're ready to eat them, I'd sort, wash, and freeze!

It's good to report it if you think you see the Northern Giant Hornet, but thankfully it's likely you're seeing the "gentle giant" Cicada Killer. Here's the difference...

We, along with many other state agencies, have been receiving numerous reports of suspected northern giant hornets lately.

First, it is AWESOME that you continue to keep an eye out for this pest. Although we declared it eradicated last December after no confirmed detections for three years, if it got here once, it could get here again.

Second, most of the suspect reports are of a native gentle giant - the cicada killer. Nearly as large and similar in appearance to the northern giant hornet, this wasp only has cicadas on its mind (yes, we do have cicadas in Washington, too!) It is rare that they bother humans or honey bees.

If you DO think you spot a northern giant hornet in Washington, we still have our reporting form available at agr.wa.gov/hornets.
