From Milinda’s Grooming Table: Mats and Mud – What Spring Can Bring
Spring is here—and with it comes muddy paws, tangled fur, and that special “I just rolled in something” look our dogs seem to love. 🌧🐾
While it’s wonderful to see our pups enjoying the outdoors, all that moisture, dirt, and debris can build up fast—especially in longer or double coats. What starts as a little mud can quickly lead to matting… and mats aren’t just messy—they can actually be painful.
Matted fur pulls on the skin, traps bacteria and moisture, and can even hide hot spots or skin irritation. Ouch.
Here’s how I help:
• Gentle detangling and coat care to remove buildup
• Proper drying techniques to stop moisture from settling in
• Trimming common problem areas, like paws, armpits, and belly, to help prevent matting
But here’s something important to know:
If a dog’s coat is severely matted, brushing it out could cause more pain than good. In those cases, I may need to shave the coat to start fresh—keeping your dog safe and comfortable is always my top priority.
I always use a kind, patient approach to grooming—and I’m here to help you prevent mats before they start. If your pup’s been living their best muddy life lately, it might be time for a spring cleanup. Their skin (and your vacuum) will thank you!
📌 Next week, I’ll be taking a deeper dive into matting—what causes it, how it affects your dog, and why “brushing it out” isn’t always the best answer. You won’t want to miss it!
