We can help our pets self-regulate and calm anxiety!

When I talk to clients, I want to help them find the tools they need to support their pet through the environment and with the right health promoting diet.

While we add the right nutritional tools for anxiety and stress (herbs, CBD, amino acids, omega-3 percentage, prebiotics/probiotics) we can support a calming environment.

Massage, pheromones, somatic or energy work, daily exercise and mental stimulation are also tools to help an anxious or stressed pet.

Here you see Miller has grabbed my running shirt (so stinky) from the clothing hamper to sleep with! We have such a fantastic bond that my smell calms and relaxes his body for sleep!

We can do so much for our anxious pets! If you have an anxious pet reach out and we will find the tools your pet needs to help calm and regulate their body!

I’ve been practicing what I learned with to help Miller with his recall. Melissa is a fantastic trainer and I learned so much from her!

It’s easy to feel lost with all of the information we hear about what and how to feed our animals.

As humans, if we feel even the tiniest bit of fear or conflict we stick to what feels safest and even easiest.

My job, as a certified pet nutrition counselor, is to help lower these barriers and help each individual pet owner find the right diet for their pet.

This is why I don’t post recipes, blanket supplement recommendations, or try and tell you how to home cook for your pet (your life is unique, budget and time specific).

When we work together I ask you specifically about your time, budget, cooking skills, as well as about your pet’s individualized health needs.

I then create a home cooking guide as your first step to balanced home cooking.

Why should you work with me? The same reason you work with a mechanic, a lawyer, doctor or contractor! You need someone who went to school for specialized training. Following an influencer on social media, asking chatGBT or asking a friend or family member will only confuse the situation and lead to nutrient deficiency.

Our animals hold a very special place in our heart and family. They have unique biology and genetic needs.

Working with a professional (who is also trusted by more veterinarians than I can count) will set you up for a lifetime of success feeding your pets and extending their life!

Plus, who knows, maybe feeding your pet fresh food ingredients will reconnect you to your own kitchen and expand your ability to offer your entire family an ancestral diet.

I meet so many pet owners who want to give their dog a home cooked diet but they worry about making sure the diet is balanced.

Instead of working with someone to make sure there is balance in the diet pet owners will give a small amount of kibble.

The problem with this approach is that it leads to nutrient deficiency with long term use.

Why?

I’ll use Miller as an example: if you look at The Honest Kitchen’s feeding recommendations you will see that Miller should get around 3 1/4- 5 cups of the food daily (or more depending on growth).

If I decided to give him any less than that for the day then I won’t be meeting his nutrient requirements. A nutrient deficiency then forces the body to dip into areas of the body that stores those nutrients to meet its daily needs. If this happens for an extended period of time disease progression can start.

Signs of a deficiency: lowered immune system, skin and coat disfunction (flakey skin, excessive loss of hair), joint and bone disease, and dental disease just to name a few!

Let me help you! If you want to give a fully home cooked diet let me balance it for you. If you want to still give your dog some kibble + home cooking, let me balance that for you. No matter what you prefer I can balance your pet’s diet.

Dog’s have a unique metabolism that prefers fats over carbohydrates for energy.

This means reducing their kibble does nothing to encourage weight loss.

Dangerously though reducing kibble leads to skin and coat disease, joint disease, dental disease and even heart disease!

Your dog has certain nutrient requirements to meet organ system fuel for longevity and health. Reducing your dog’s kibble past the recommendations on the back of the bag for longer than a few weeks leads to system disfunction as the body dips too far into its nutrient storage to meet its daily function.

Coco’s mom came to me after her vet told her to just reduce coco’s Hill’s Metabolic diet even further to 3/4 cup a day (for an 85 lbs dog). Coco has been on this diet for over a year +.

Coco has sever joint disease and skin and coat concerns (literally the skin is falling out in chunks, yikes!) I worry about her heart as well as labs need essential amino acids like taurine and carnitine for function and health. A diet this low, would definitely lead to heart disease.

I created a species appropriate diet to fuel weight loss while also promoting the health of the entire system! This includes high quality protein and fats with low glycemic veggies as well as organ meat. This diet is also balanced in all minerals and vitamins.

Coco is 12 and I believe that she will be back to walking, running, and swimming with puppy like energy at a healthy weight. I also believe that Coco’s life will be extended with this new diet, something every pet owner hopes for!

Yes, dogs benefit from 10-15% plant material in their diet (some dogs need even more, some dogs less).

Benefits include: Vitamins, minerals, fibers (prebiotic food), moisture, antioxidants and other phytonutrients.

Veggies have to be processed in a way that the dog can digest it better. I like blanched veggies since this methods helps retain the nutrients.

All frozen veggies are blanched, which makes it an easy choice for busy pet parents. Most bags even come with a seal so you can just close it up and put it back in the fridge for the next meal. (Notice Miller gets the bottom shelf of my fridge!)

I like the Normandy blend for its diversity. I always pick up a green like spinach or kale as well which is the most important veggie to include for diet balancing (so start with that!)

Do you have more questions? Let’s set up a consultation! Let’s find the right diet for your unique animal. And play around with seeing what veggies your dog prefers.

Some of my clients have reported butternut squash, cucumbers, dandelion greens, beets, bell pepper and brussels ! (No onions)
