Play session with Princess.
Princess was adopted from Lyon County Animal Services before I could post this video. I wasnt going to post this but the new adopters wanted to see it.

How do we make obedience training something our dogs actually enjoy?
We incorporate play into the process.

This session is a simple example: I’m using a tug game to teach basic rules while reinforcing the “sit” command. The rules are clear—when I say “out,” the tug must be released, and the dog only gets to grab it when I mark with “yes.”

It’s okay if your dog makes mistakes. When Princess grabs the tug before the marker, I let her have it—but we don’t play. We reset, fix the behavior, then get back to the fun.

Be fun. Be creative. Change up how you play. Let your dog win, but make them think you're giving it your all.

Over time, you’ll build a stronger relationship, and the obedience will naturally follow. You'll become the most rewarding and exciting part of your dog’s life.

Meet Shelia
She is currently available for adoption at Lyon County Animal Services
Shelia has been at the shelter for 1 year and 1 day.
She’s a fantastic dog who, unfortunately, keeps getting overlooked.
She’s full of personality—loves affection, chasing balls, and getting wet and muddy.
She’s not a good fit for homes with small dogs or cats, but with the right match, she’ll be an amazing companion.
If no one steps up to adopt her, I guess I’ll just have to keep having all the fun and making more videos with her!

This is Bobby and his dog, Brandee. When it comes to pet training, it often involves compromise. I can't always use the most effective or ideal methods—clients have different abilities, and sometimes I need to think outside the box to navigate challenges and still help the dog make progress. Bobby is a great example of this.

When Bobby first came to me, Brandee was completely out of control. He couldn’t walk her because she would drag him down the street, jumping, biting, and being destructive around the house. Bobby was deeply committed to Brandee—he just didn’t know where to start.

The first step was teaching him how to engage with her through play. This not only helped improve her behavior at home but also laid the foundation for obedience training. Both Bobby and Brandee did an amazing job.

Roo who is available for adoption Lyon County Animal Services made it out into the real world today.

Roo has come such a long way since arriving at the shelter. Today, we went on a little field trip to the park and Lowe's—and she absolutely crushed it. She’s learned to trust people and followed me confidently wherever we went. She even tackled the playset like a pro, which is incredible considering most dogs won’t go near it.

She walked through Lowe's like it was just another day out—calm, curious, and totally composed. I couldn’t be more proud of her. Roo is truly an amazing dog and she’s ready to find her forever home.

She may be shy at first with new people, but with a little time and patience, she’ll warm up and learn to trust you. She's so worth the wait.

If you would like to see where Roo started here is a link to her first video. https://www.facebook.com/share/v/19GE9AyAUL/

Update from Roo who is available for addoption at Lyon County Animal Services
Dogs don’t need our pity — they need our support to move forward and gain the confidence to live happy, healthy lives.

Roo started out terrified: afraid of being touched, frightened by the leash, and overwhelmed by just about everything. But today, she’s catching a ball, seeking out affection, and even getting into the car on her own.

I want to highlight just how powerful play can be in a dog’s life. It’s not just about exercise — play builds trust, strengthens your bond, and helps boost your dog’s confidence. It can even be used as a form of positive reinforcement.

If your dog doesn’t know how to play, it doesn’t mean they’re “dumb” — it simply means they haven’t learned yet. And that’s where you come in: not to give up, but to guide and show them how.

This clip is just a small glimpse into the role play is taking in Roo’s journey. The car entry you’ll see wasn’t her smoothest — she can now jump straight in from the ground — but it still shows something more important: confidence. She missed, but she was willing to try again. And that’s a win.

If you're dealing with behavior issues. Obedience training isnt always the answer. Your dog might be missing something else.

For months, Rusty was confined to the area around his cabin, unable to walk on a leash and considered a significant flight risk. Now, he enjoys daily walks with the staff and has even met a few other dogs. One of them, Lucky who has been especially helpful in Rusty's progress. While Rusty isn’t quite ready to play yet, Lucky instinctively understood that and gave him space. With his cheerful and easygoing nature, Lucky has been a comforting and confidence-boosting presence for Rusty.

Lucky is available for adoption at WARF - Wylie Animal Rescue Foundation (Incline Village, NV). If you're interesed in adopting Lucky please contact the rescue.

"What’s better than playing on your own personal snow cone after a client session? Leeloo leads a busy life—we’re always out and about, tackling something new every day. She’s truly the best work partner I could ask for."

We got Andor.
If your dog doesn’t naturally chase a ball or enjoy tug games, don’t worry—it just takes a little patience and encouragement. The key is to make the toy something they’re excited to have. Move it around playfully, show enthusiasm, and when your dog tries to grab it, pull it away to build their interest. This helps create a desire to engage with the toy. At first, Andor showed no interest in balls at the shelter. But with time, and some playful help from Leeloo, we started to build that interest. With a bit of work, Andor is learning to enjoy chasing the ball and is even starting to play tug. Your dog can learn to love these games too!

If you're interested in adopting Andor he is currently at Lyon County Animal Services.
