Have you ever wondered what those special dog or puppy grooming supplies feel like? Have you ever brushed a rake across your skin? Have you ever taken a slicker and brushed it across your skin? What about the four-pronged razor claw? Have you ever used any of these tools on yourself?
I ask because we, well at least I, often wonder how our pets feel when they're being groomed. We often wonder what effect, or stimulation the whole grooming experience has on our babies. Our ultimate hope, as responsible, caring, loving pet parents is that the experience of being groomed will be one of enjoyment and pleasure for our little ones. Well, I had the unfortunate realization this morning that this entire process of grooming, and beautifying our babies, can be quite painful for them if WE are not careful!
This morning as I was removing my braids, I needed a very fine, very soft, tool that would not rip out my hair as I was removing them. So, I decided to use the Slicker brush. The brush that's supposed to be the finishing touch to the groom. The brush that's supposed to make your hair silky, and shiny, and oh so soft!
But, can you say ouch?
I guess my point in this post, is Just to bring awareness to you that some of these tools that are special for long-hair dogs like the Shih-Tzu, can be painful! A Slicker brush, with half inch bristles on it, with rubber tips, hurts if you are not careful.
Before using any tools on your baby, test it on your own skin FIRST! Use different angles and get a feel for the pressure that comes with it. Different directional strokes of different tools HAVE different sensations that come with it. So, when grooming, pay attention to the (not so) little things.
Make the experience as special as can be.
Make the time at the table one of pleasure and relaxation. An opportunity for bonding time with you and your little one.
