Foals under anesthesia aren’t just “small horses”—they’re delicate, rapidly developing patients with unique needs. At Mallard Medical, we’re committed to supporting veterinary professionals with equipment and insights that help protect these vulnerable lives 🐴

Foals under anesthesia require extra care due to their small size and developing systems. Vets often use specially designed, smaller endotracheal tubes to help them breathe, and they’re closely monitored for hypothermia since foals lose body heat faster than adult horses. Their rapid metabolism also means anesthetic doses must be precisely tailored to avoid over- or under-sedation.

This week, we’re spotlighting how our partners care for neonatal equine patients—because when it comes to life-saving surgery, every detail matters.

Helping Houdini Breathe Again 🦏💨

We’re proud that Mallard Medical’s large animal ventilator/anesthesia system supported the University of Pretoria's veterinary team in a remarkable, life-saving surgery on Houdini, a white rhino bull who survived a poaching attack.

After a severe nasal obstruction threatened his ability to breathe, Houdini underwent nearly 6 hours of invasive surgery. With complex anesthetic challenges and a compromised airway, reliable equipment was critical. Our system helped maintain stable cardiopulmonary function throughout the procedure, giving the team the confidence to operate.

Today, Houdini is breathing freely and back on his feet—a powerful reminder of the impact dedicated care and precise tools can make.

Huge respect to the experts at UP and The Rhino Orphanage. We’re honored to play a small part in such meaningful work.

🧼 Keep Your Mallard in Peak Condition 🧼

We're proud to showcase our partners at Rhinebeck Equine in New York performing some essential maintenance on their Mallard large animal ventilator/anesthesia machine.

They’re doing it right—cleaning out hoses and bellows with a simple, effective solution:
🔹 3 parts water to 1 part white vinegar
🔹 5 liters total
🔹 Letting the system drain overnight for a thorough rinse and dry

Preventative maintenance like this keeps your Mallard running reliably and safely for every procedure. Clean equipment = clean outcomes. 🐴🩺

📍 Want your staff trained on proper cleaning and upkeep? We’re here to help.

Fun Fact 🐴🧠

Did you know horses have incredible memories—on par with elephants? They can remember human faces, places, and even medical or handling experiences for years. That’s why consistent, gentle care matters so much in equine healthcare.

At Mallard Medical, we build ventilator/anesthesia machines that support calm, safe procedures—because what horses remember can shape how they heal. 💙✨
