BREAKING! New World screwworms are fly larvae that burrow into a wound or mucous membranes of animals. Concerns over this flesh-eating parasite have led U.S. officials to halt all imports of live cattle, horses and bison across the Southern border.

The New World screwworm is endemic in parts of Latin America and the Caribbean — and its northward spread into Mexico has alarmed U.S. officials. It can kill a full-grown cow in one to two weeks.

If your horse is showing signs of lameness due to "abcesses" that just won’t improve, you might be dealing with a keratoma – a rare hoof condition that can cause pain and affect your horse’s performance. A keratoma is a benign tumor inside the hoof wall that presses on sensitive structures, causing discomfort and, in severe cases, damage to the coffin bone (P3).

While keratomas can be tricky to detect, some signs to watch for include:
• Persistent lameness
• Sensitivity around the toe area
• Subtle changes in hoof shape
